I planned a short weekend trip with my 2 sons, 13 & 9, just to get away from the city and relax. The available options at the time were a lake view cabin, or park view. We went with lake view, and it was a great little spot. The lake view cabins (1-4) are on quarry island, the park view are up by the office. Both offer a really nice and clean view of the area they are in. Plenty of outdoor cooking areas and tables, as well as trash receptacles. We were also going to be arriving after hours. The office has a lock box that they set the code so you can access it. Inside was not only the key and receipt, but a copy of the park map that directed us right to our cabin. very handy because it was dark when we arrived.
Because we came at the end of January, it was not busy at all. Upon arrival, the cabin was clean and ready to go. The fire ring out back was in good shape, the patio chairs provided were well-built, and the picnic table was more than sufficient. Inside was clean, with plenty of towels and extra linens. Having spent several years in the pest control industry, I always do a bed bug check at any place I stay. Happy to say there was nothing to worry about in that regard.
Since we stayed during covid, there were no dishes or cooking utensils in the cabin. If you plan to cook, you will want to bring whatever pots/pans you need. This was stated prior to booking so we planned accordingly. The kitchen did have a stove top and oven, fridge/freezer, as well as a standard coffee pot and toaster. One regular and one decaf coffee pack was also provided. The TV was a fairly current flat screen, with standard hook ups in back. Local channels are available on that as well.
In between the island and other cabins is a splash pad and mini golf course, as well as a covered pavilion. There is also a small gas station/bait & tackle shop less than 5 minutes away. They also serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Food was pretty good there, we had lunch and breakfast before we headed home.
Overall it was a great stay, and we won't hesitate to visit again. Less than an hour from Robbers Cave, and 20 minutes from the...
Read moreRecently stayed at a duplex cabin at Wister Lake State Park. When we got to our cabin, the site and the scenery was great. I could picture bringing family and friends to this site, and having a really good time at the cabin. The problem with this is that they are duplex cabins. Maybe if they were stand alone cabins, that would be one thing. But the neighbors on the other side of the duplex were loud, and they brought friends over who were talking loud outside until at least 2:30 am. Some of them had flashlights and went walking behind our cabin, so I went out the front door to see what they were doing. When one of them entered our space with his flashlight, he shined his light on me, then walked back to his side of the duplex. The living room couch that folds out into a bed was awful. Sleeping on that thing was out of the question. So if you're not sleeping in an actual bed in the cabin, I recommend bringing an air mattress. Also the door that leads from our side of the duplex into the other side was out of whack, and the lock wouldn't lock. The only thing keeping this door locked was a chain lock. I put a heavy chair against that door just for piece of mind. The next morning, the neighbors next door got up at 6am, and you could hear every single word they said, as if they were standing in the same room. So sleep was out of the question at this cabin. So the whole experience was 50/50. The scenery was great, the picnic table and chairs around the fire pit, and the chairs on the patio were great. I could see it having potential. But the thing that ruined everything was stupid neighbors who wanted to stay up late, get drunk, and not care about anyone else around them. So if i go back, i would recommend renting both sides of the duplex cabin. And bringing an...
Read moreMy wife and I stayed in a cabin here in December last year. The park itself is kind of spread out around the lake. The lake seems really nice, but it wasn't much use to us in December. The lake seems to be the focus at this park. The trails near our cabin didn't seem like they had been used in a while... In general, it didn't seem like there was a whole lot to do here in the winter. It does seem like it'd be a fun spot in the summer though. We ended up taking a drive over to see the Heavener runestone which was interesting.
Overall, the cabin was very affordable, clean, and comfortable. Each cabin seemed to have an outdoor fire ring, picnic table, and grill. There were a couple things that could have been better though. First of all, I didn't see any firewood for sale which was a bummer considering how cold it was. I suppose I should have asked before we got there, but learn from my mistake. Bring your own or be prepared to find your own. Also, there was no microwave in the kitchen. The stove/oven was pretty small (which is fine), but the oven didn't seem to seal right and was actually turning the cabinet black next to it. Also, if you're going to put a gas stove in the kitchen without electric ignition, you should probably provide matches to light it... The cookware was marginal at best.
Overall, I would recommend visiting here as long as you understand what you're getting. The cabins would be a perfect place to visit in the summer as a step above camping. I wouldn't consider it quite a home away from home. I would go back, but I would definitely be more...
