Great hiking trails up into the bluffs and through the valleys. If you plan on doing some hiking, definitely check out bluff trail. It is a bit of a challenge, but the overlooks are fantastic, and you get a nice view of Paint Creek winding though the hills.

I was surprised to see how well kept the camping areas were. The picnic tables are in extremely good condition and the fire pits provide an adjustable grate for cooking (not like the usual half corroded and bent in grates typically found welded to one side of a state provided firepit)

Little paint campground provides a little more privacy than Big Paint, although most sites are fairly open. The picnic table are pretty immaculate in comparison to most state park campgrounds and the firepit provided has a really nice adjustable swinging grate for cooking food. If you want something more rustic, there are walk-in sites off the trail which are also well maintained, just have to do a bit of hiking to get in so its not really ideal for car camping.

Overall a great park with plenty of hiking and...

Campground is probably the best of the State Forest campgrounds I've been in and I've been in more than most people with long years as a scout and long history of being a scout leader.

Also, the Rangers went far and above. There was a mixup and one of the rangers the day before accidently wrote the wrong outdate on my post. While I was hiking someone else came and setup on my site (oddly despite my stuff being there - but it was Memorial Day Weekend so chances are they thought I was just going to come back and pickup what I left before I left for the day - I'm thinking. Of course the campground was full.) Regardless, the Forest Rangers (Father an Son, didn't get names) came up with a solution for me to move to the group campground since the group that was supposed to be there wasn't and I just camp in my truck, so it was very easy for me to pack up and move. T

Totally enjoyed my time, much regard and respect for the Rangers coming up with a solution that worked for all. ...

Best campground I have ever camped in. My family & I randomly picked Yellow River to get away from everything. My husband wanted to be close a trout stream so I called the park asked which campground was best & was very politely directed to Little Paint. A family of family decided to camp with us (next to us) & We have both been back about every weekend since. The kids love it, it's peaceful, relaxing & serine. It gets the family (or group of camping buddies/friends) close again & bonding (if you ever notice you can be sitting right next to someone & instead of talking people will text ect or playing video games) in this area you have no data, no service & no signal. It is great to get back to spending quality time with no outside interference & even better in such a breathtakingly beautiful area. So many things to do & see. No pictures or videos can do justice to the beauty of this natural wonderland. We love it & highly recommend...

The wife and I love trout fishing the Driftless. Northeast Iowa has some of the best trout streams in the world. Yellow River Forest has Paint and Little Paint creeks. Browns, Rainbows, and Brook trout. Campgrounds are excellent. There are no hook ups for RV. Cost is $9 dollars per night. Campsites are stream side. For horse lovers. They have Campsites for you as well. Over 40 miles of trails to ride on. This is a secluded forest. No cell service. Plenty of day trips near by. About 20 minutes to nearest town for supplies. Update: Cost is $12/night. Fire rings and picnic tables have been replaced or rebuilt. Stream maintenance has improved access to streams. The Iowa DNR and the Friends of Yellow River Forest do an excellent job of keeping this a jewel of Iowa.

I first camped here in the early-mid 1980's and I've wanted to return ever since. And I did recently with my son when we went on a midwest camping trip. The campgrounds are nice and clean, but the pit toilets...well, they are pit toilets!! Aside from that the campgrounds are perfect for a no frills camping trip. The price is an absolute deal! The trails and scenic overlooks are incredible. It's hard to believe this is Iowa. Most people think of cornfields and cows, but this is eastern Iowa - lots of hills and bluffs and woods. It is also just up the road from the Effigy Mounds National Monument, a truly special place to visit. I hope to get back to this state forest soon. I bet it is stunning in the autumn.

There are a lot of things to love about Yellow River State Forest - there are some beautiful trails, very nice campgrounds, an active volunteer community that obviously loves the forest and puts a lot into it. When we were there, there we some less lovely things - there are massive Japanese knotweed infestations along the waterways. Some of the forest roads could use some help (be careful if you don't have a high clearance vehicle). Some of the backpacking trails were pretty overgrown. You have to take the good and bad together, though, when you're enjoying the great outdoors.
