Beautiful boulder-scape with breathtaking vistas. Lots of fun stair-stepping up and down natural stone stairways. There are numerous pathways marked with white dots that crisscross one another. If you are not familiar with the area, it’s easy to get lost and hike in circles. There are a few scattered signs, but they are ambiguous. I’d advise hiking with someone that knows the park. Cell phone reception is almost nil, so you can’t rely on GPS, bring a manual compass if you’re alone. I got lost both times I went and added hours onto my hike trying different permutations to get back to the trailhead.

With a preschooler, it took us about 1.5 hours from trailhead parking lot to Watson Dam for a much needed break and the back again (which we tracked as 2.2 miles). Not easy for our family, quite rocky at beginning and as approaching the dam, but enjoyed by all! Gorgeous and varied surroundings (rocky, prairie, grassy, woods, 3 bridges, rocky stairs). Fun to look for the next white dot for littles. Make sure littles have good shoes for safety and hat for sunny parts. Sense of accomplishment at the end. Beautiful.

The Flume trail is an up close experience of the granite spires that are unique to Prescott. Wonder in, out and over this amazing landscape guided by white dots painted on the rock. Lots of smaller trails branch off and take you on intimate adventures into the granite dells with magical views and giant formations that can be described as art. Most trails can easily be trekked in wet weather. Plenty of stepping up and trip hazard but generally easy to navigate.
