This is a wonderful place to have a picnic in the John Day NM area. (Actually, probably the only area with picnic benches). We had it almost to ourselves on a weekday at the end of April. The Cant ranch has a lot of history of ranching in this area and is worth a stop to walk around. The only thing it’s missing is a restroom. You need to go up to the visitors center (1 min drive ) up the road for those. The house is only open seasonally so be aware of that if you want to go in.

While the various trails through the Painted Hills are the main attraction for sure, the picnic area is a nice shady spot to stop to enjoy a meal, use the bathroom, and learn a bit about the trails, landscape, and local wildflowers. The free wifi available in the picnic area is a nice bonus since there's no cell service in that area.

Perfect thing to do at the end of your visit here. Little gift shop with snacks and beverages. Also have makes for the entire area and close by area to visit.
