I came here on a complete lark - I wanted to see something cool on my last day of vacation, put "mansion tours" in google, and basically threw a dart at a board and headed where I was told. What a marvellous surprise this was: I think I expected the usual formal roped off museum treatment and instead found something distinctly more personable and interesting, first interrupting 3 very friendly guys discussing a renovation project (I can only imagine those are a never ending cascade), then a short DVD presentation, then the grand tour. The tour guide (not the owner) was truly passionate about the history, construction, and all of the neat little artifacts, and answered all my weird questions with a solid sense of humor. I got a wealth of stories about both the objects, as well as the more recent history of repairs, events, halloweens, and eventual discovery buy the paranormal interest community. Again, not a sterile museum presentation - this house has been lived in and its beautiful bones are propped up by hope and effort and seeing that patina made it feel more "real", and it's just eye candy to fans of horror, ghosts, grand architecture, craftsmanship (the hand stenciled ceilings, while somewhat ravaged by time, are breathtaking...the stained glass, the highly polished mahogany, all of it)... The castle is an absolute treat and one of the best discoveries I've made this year. Go see something wonderful and help them keep this...
Read moreI had wanted to go here for some time, and finally made it on our second trip to VT. I was very enthralled in the visit. The castle and grounds are absolutely beautiful, and I was glad to learn that the staff onsite, had just acquired some equipment and would be making strides to return the grounds to original format (when constructed). Our guide for the day was great, very knowledgeable and pointed out some very interesting features of the building. The building is said to have some paranormal activity, and I can not say we experienced any direct happenings, but there was vibe or feeling to the building that does peak interest in learning more. I was happy to know, though, that Sara, the main spirit, enjoys company and kids, which is good because we did take our two little ones with us. They too enjoyed the features, fireplace counting, the lions details, and playing the organ. I'd recommend this place to anyone interested in great history and in general unique Americana (albeit the castle is modeled in traditional...
Read moreThe castle itself is pretty cool, but it's seriously falling apart. So why do I give it 5 stars? The staff. We were made very welcome, and they made conversation the whole time we were there. You can tell they care a great deal about this castle, and I really wish they could receive the funding to restore it to it's full potential.
While the overall shape of the castle may not be perfect, there are tons and tons of really cool furniture and decorations. The interior of this place is absolutely gorgeous. I especially recommend the art gallery, with lots of natural light and a respectably large statue in the center, this room is definitely something to see.
If you want to see a rad castle and support a good cause at the same time, please do...
