We reached the tip of the Cape! For this trip I went with my 3 kids: a 15 year old, 13 year old, and 11 year old. For free parking, we parked our car at the Province Lands Visitor Center. We then biked from there to the Pilgrim’s First Landing Park (about 15 minutes of biking). We then locked our bikes at one of the railings there. (Looking back, we could have just parked at Pilgrim’s First Landing Park rotary so we could have eliminated the bike ride, but parking space is limited, so I suggest looking at it first and if there’s no availability, go to the visitor center lot) We then proceeded to cross the Provincetown Causeway, which is an over a mile long stretch of piles of huge rocks that serve as a bridge to connect Pilgrim’s First Landing Park to Long Point Beach. A couple more miles trek and we reached Long Point Light Station, which is the tip of Cape Cod. Along the way we were followed by a pod of seals which was a cool experience for the kids. Roundtrip, the hike was 4.8 miles total (start and end point at Pilgrim’s First Landing Park). It took us 2 hours and 45 minutes, which included water breaks, picture taking, and short picnic. I recommend taking this hike when you...
Read moreI was determined to get to this cool lighthouse in spite of blustery conditions that were less than ideal for a challenging hike.
The walk across the breakwater to get here is a unique experience. Hikers must step carefully while traversing the jagged rock.
My wife wasn’t thrilled about me doing this because we had heard about people slipping and tripping on the rocks and having to be rescued.
Also, you have to time it so you complete it during low tide. Some people mistime it and get stranded on the rocks.
I had a slight slip or two but I’m pretty sure footed, didn’t let the wind knock me over and finished without incident. I was the only hiker at that time, so I had the whole island to myself.
As I was finishing up on the breakwater in the return a young couple walked along the rocks. I pointed to where I had been. They said they weren’t going to do that.
I left them with some parting advice: watch your step and don’t get blown over.
Highly...
Read moreWe walked to the lighthouse via the Causeway and then through the beach. It took us about 3 hours, maybe more, because we stopped a few times to swim and to watch the seals. Some highlights from our walk: We didn’t realize the distance. We thought it would take about an hour, so we didn’t bring enough water. It was extremely hot, and we ran out of water as soon as we crossed the causeway. Even though we applied sunscreen right before starting, it wasn’t enough. We got sunburned. I recommend wearing light, protective clothing and bringing sunscreen. Wear sneakers. There’s a lot of poison ivy, especially when crossing the island. Also, walking on sand in flip-flops is tough, and going barefoot isn’t much better because the shore is quite rocky and full of shells. But even though we weren’t fully prepared for this walk, we absolutely loved it. The views are stunning, we swam several times along the way, saw plenty of seals. It is...
