Took the dogs here as I have a PA Parks Passport book and wanted to get this checked off the list. I read that it was historically the very first PA state park, so included it on a trip to Michaeux State Forest and Caledonia State Park. Glad we did, as it's an easy stop and offered a hiking trail I wasn't expecting (off of parking lot across the street). ample parking and nicely maintained native plant garden good venue for large group who want a site under cover neat history I wish more about the history was posted at the park itself (e.g. would love to know about the old stone steps and other traces of structures in the woods) wish there was a direct trail up to the monument to the iron workers (since that's connected to the park's history, as I understand it) It'd be great if there were were trail maps or more info on the trails there (e.g. can you take the trail off the parking lot connect to the Meeting of the Pines grove)? -Frustratringly, there are no State Park Passport stamps/stickers available on site. And, while Caledonia is supposed to have them available outside it didn't have any left for either park. Had to email the PA P&R folks to get one mailed. :-(
In sum, a clean, pretty well-maintained and clearly loved little park with some interesting but not well advertised trail options.
Advice: across and up the road from the main site is a pavilion with its own barbecue area. Good for get togethers. +The trail off of main parking lot does connect to and go through it upper pavilion. The wooded creek along the trail features old but intact splash damns, so maybe of interest to herpatology photographers depending on the seaon. +while in the area, visit the Cider Shack - just four miles down route 997 (nice folks and their seasonal peach sundaes...
Read moreGreat spot to picnic in the mountains. There a round green tin carousel pavilion that protects the tables. Small play area and a stream nearby are nice to play in with the kids.
While not much to look at, this is the oldest state park in Pennsylvania, having neen under the Commonwealths ownership for 113 years. Originally a furnace, then a picnicing spot and now a state park. Small parking lot sits just across route 233. Restrooms...
Read moreBeautiful park within southern Michaux. Trails were covered in snow but conditions were still great (we rode our mountain bikes and footholes weren’t frozen over so was mostly rideable).
Added a photo of the pavilion at the entrance of the park. Looks like a nice place to have lunch. Trail across the street where the parking lot is winds around and through the stream parallel to the paved road. It was gorgeous this...
