Very interesting, historical location with monuments & lookout area. Numerous plaques describing events that took place at the site. It sits on the North end of Pawnee Rock, KS. A lot of history in this area. It sits on the highest point in the area, for visibility, to be able to see incoming threats in a time of war. You can go up a winding staircase to the top of the building area & see for many miles in any direction. It's a must-see for anyone, with some light hiking areas around the Rock. It's a really neat place to visit & learn about the area & time when it was built. Highly Recommended for anyone to...

This place was way cooler than I was led to believe! The history of the site makes it worth a stop if you're in the area. The platform and monument is cool, but the amazing thing is seeing the names of all the travelers who came through on the Santa Fe Trail. The rock face is completely covered in names. There is a really nice picnic area, but no restrooms. There is also a nice path with plaques describing about the history of...

It's not the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone but this place is pretty cool. The local story is, during its era, it was used to spot Indian movement and alert Fort Larned if needed. It was also the meeting point of all of the local tribes. Lot's of battles fought near here. They say bones are still found in the area. Great place to picnic with...

An unexpected stop on our journey home last weekend was at Pawnee Rock. I saw on the map that it was fairly close to Ft. Larned and not too far out of our way, so of course we had to go see it. Pawnee Rock is a large sandstone rock formation that was an important site for both Indians and white settlers. Plains Indians were known to use the high point of Pawnee Rock as an observation point to track and hunt buffaloes, as well as wagon trains. Though it was considered a dangerous spot at times for travelers, it was known as a welcomed landmark for Santa Fe Trail travelers because it marked an approximate halfway point to their destination. Travelers often carved their names into the soft sandstone and legend says that it was difficult to find a spot to write your name with all the names already found on it. Unfortunately, much of Pawnee Rock was lost in the 1870s due to settlers and railroads needing stone for building projects. The area was turned over to the state as a historical site and it was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. It’s unbelievable to imagine all the history that happened at this site! 🌻 #thatkshistorynerd #kansashistoryteacher #whosayskansasisboring #kansashistorynerd #ToTheStarsKS #KansasTourism #SantaFeTrail #teacheronsummerbreak #pawneerock
