I grew up going to this park, and I love this park. However, I am becoming concerned with the accessibility of the park to all members of the public. The cost to have access to all trails in this park year-round has risen substantially over the years. It now costs $150 to access all trails in the park year-round ($30 for the Discover Pass, $50 for the Snow Park Pass, and $70 for a Special Groomed Trail Sticker). In the future, I hope the Park takes into consideration the burden price increases has on certain members of the public and chooses to focus more on making sure as many members of the public have access to their lands as possible. While I do not enjoy crowds necessarily, I find it morally wrong to prevent people from accessing land they should have access to. Other States I have visited (Idaho and Montana) as well as many areas in Canada are able to provide similar services for a much lower cost, and many...
Read moreMt. Spokane State park is a great POTA (Parks On The Air) site for any amateur radio operator to activate, due to the elevation. I have personally activated it on 80, 20, 15, 2M and 70cm. There is limited access during the winter months due to snow to the summit, which limits the SOTA (Summits On The Air) activations. However, the park contains 3 summits, Mt. Spokane, Quartz Mt. and Ragged Ridge for the SOTA activators to get during the summer months. There is quite high RF noise at the summit of Mt. Spokane due to the commercial radio/TV transmitters on Mt. Spokane, the use of bandpass filters is advised. There is easy access to Mt. Spokane in the summer, the other peaks are acessed via the Selkirk Lodge area and require hiking and carrying your radio equipment. Limited cell phone coverage at Selkirk and other places lower on...
Read moreMt Spokane State Park begins with a beautiful drive up the mountain on a windy, tree-laden road. There is a ranger station at the park entrance where you can purchase daily passes, or you can use your Discover Pass. There are multiple picnic areas and over 100 miles of trails from easy to harder hikes, horse or bike rides (check permission per trail on their web site). There is a 1935 CCC Heritage House you can hike into, as well as the Vista House on the top. There are beautiful views from the top as well as the hikes. Mt Spokane has active ski slopes during the winter. A nice place for a beer and/or dinner is at Bear Creak Lodge on the...
