The road is perfectly fine. Either it gets terrible during the winter, or the side-by-side boomers are trying to gatekeep this place so they can do donuts in the parking lot and destroy the trails in peace.
Trailhead to lake shore is a hair over 2mi and 1200ft of elevation gain. Loads of scrambling opportunities beyond that point. Gorgeous hike and lake. Not as busy as I'd expect, but lots of off-leash dogs and geriatrics cutting the switchbacks to show nature who's boss.
Probably worth avoiding during peak season / weekends but otherwise a lovely hike with a quick punch...
