Although Shasta State Historic Park is seemingly small (approximately one block in length) of mostly brick building ruins, visiting here is certainly worth a trip. It is located about six miles west of Redding California (before Whiskeytown NRA) and easy to find along Hwy 299. The accompanying museums are fantastic, especially wandering about the historic store that was sold to the California State Park system. It is still intact with its original merchandise. The on-site Ranger certainly helps visitors discover products on the shelves of this old mercantile. The park is a great place to spend an afternoon, learning about one of California’s great...

A well preserved piece of history and definitely worth spending an afternoon there! Once a bustling gold mining town in the late 1800's, Shasta (previously Old Shasta) is now a quiet little community nestled in the foothills just below Whiskeytown Lake. The Park features the preserved brick buildings of the Town including blacksmith, butcher shop, old saloon, bank and many more. Take a relaxing walk around the ruins and check out the museum, learn the rich history of the town with relics from the gold rush era. On the odd weekend there are doors open that normally arent and I've even seen a blacksmith demonstration there, very...

I've driven through it many times, but I visited only once when I was a kid, and this place is much cooler than I remembered it. You're actually able to walk amongst some of the ruins. Also, I happened to be there in mid-spring, and the place was blooming with poppies, which provided some amazing photo opportunities. The courthouse museum was also very interesting and had more variety than I expected. The site is also home to the oldest Masonic lodge in CA. The ruins are literally located right on the main road, and can be visited for free, so there is no reason to not stop here.
