Elk were out of control. They were all over the road and even in the bathroom. Try waiting your turn for an elk. Fortunately the BLM Coos Bay is planning on doing a prescribed burn there to help motivate their lethargic elk. The BLM should limit the elk petting area. The parking lot is to small and the elk seemed nervous when I attempted to pet them. Probably because I had fired up my bbq in the back of my truck earlier to cook some delicious steaks. I'm giving this area 5 stars because the elk rides through the fields were...

Excellent place to stop for a restroom break, and leg stretching, for the weary traveler. You could probably even catch a couple hours of shut eye, if you need to rest. To top it all off, if the elk are migrating, then you will be fortunate enough to view whole beards of elk, not just one or two. If I remember correctly they have camp grounds a little further up the road, right on the coast where the elk will just wonder through your camp, as if you aren't even there. Enjoy folks, that's what you came here...

I visited the Dean Creek Elk viewing area today April 3, 2017 and noticed a couple of the elk were limping. My daughter worked for Washington Conservation Corp for a couple years and she said when Elk are spotted with leg problems it usually means they have some sort of hoof disease and they have some people that go out and euthanize the infected elk so it doesn't spread. One was limping pretty bad, the other three in the group weren't as bad. Just thought you would like to know. It is a really great...

We saw about 50 elk in two different herds (the males and the harem, with 4-5 babies) around 11am. The viewing area has a pair of free binoculars (the kind you usually pay for at the beach) that you can use to get an up close view of the elk. There is plenty of parking and the two viewing areas are about 100 feet apart. One is covered, the other is an open deck. If you're from an area where there aren't elk (we are) this is a great opportunity to see them up close in their natural habitat.

It's amazing to think that you can drive up to this unfenced area and see elk, but that's what we did two days in a row. Right now the bucks and cows are in separate herds. The males are in full velvet with already large racks. We counted about 50 elk in all both days. They don't seem to be bothered by the cars and people getting out to see them. Worth the drive out on Hwy 38 from Hwy 101 in Reedsport to see then. Several places to view them.

Beautiful roadside viewing with a consistent herd of elk. There are several pull off locations. The primary parking lot has a gazebo with informative displays all about the herd in the various seasons. There are bathrooms which we didn’t check out and lots of benches to sit on. It wasn’t crowded the day we went, but it’s the off season for tourism in the area. Bring binoculars in case they’re all laying in the tall grass.
