A great place to view the Dunes from a platform that overlook the sandy hills.
The Oregon Dunes Trail is about four miles long and takes you in a loop to the ocean.
I started on the right side of the trail, which is only one and half miles to the beach.
The trail is paved for a short distance and then takes you through a forest to the open dunes.
Look for trail markers to help guide you through the dunes.
The trail takes you to a forest and open dunes. The beachgrass will be thicker as you approach the ocean.
The trail continues on the beach for another two and half miles. The beach is really long and windy.
I turned back after walking along the beach for the one and half mile hike back to the trailhead.
You will not find towering dunes at this location, but this area is the most accessible for people who are not able to hike the Dunes.
A five dollar fee is required in cash at the self service fee station.
It is nesting season for the Western Snowy Plower and there certain restrictions posted including no dogs or drones.
The Oregon Dunes are south of Siltcoos Beach and about eleven miles from Reedsport.
A good place to spend an afternoon on a hike that takes you through forests, sand dunes,...
Read moreWent here based on other reviews I read that said make this your stop if it's your only one in the dunes area. Was rather disappointed. Not too much of a view from the overlook area by the parking. Has restrooms. Took the trail about half a mile down into the open dunes which was interesting but not super different around here than standard oceanside dunes. The trail, although it says it's paved, is not suitable for wheelchairs. It's barely paved and extremely crumbly, basically dissolved into gravel in most places, with very slippery pine needles on top of that and several parts too steep for a wheelchair. There's also a section entirely covered in sand which would be impassable in a wheelchair and you would not be able to get to the oceanside at all.
If this information was helpful, I'd appreciate a quick like or...
Read morePretty cool area. The kids had fun playing in the sand. We only went down the sand trail a bit because the trails weren't packed down and it was difficult walking back up. There was a nice picnic table there off to the side of the one trail where we had a picnic lunch. The restrooms were helpful too. There us a fee for using the state park but there is no cell reception to buy it there as they ask you too. Luckily it is also a US Forest Rec site and our National Parks America the Beautiful pass worked for it too (as did our state campground...
