This state park is amazing! They have a lighthouse, museum, gift shop, campground, lake, picnic areas, and dunes. The lighthouse and museum cost $8 for adults to enter. I've been to a similar lighthouse on the coast for free, so we didn't feel like $8 was worth it, but if you haven't been in one before it might be worth it. The campground is really beautiful and you can get to all of the things mentioned above with a short walk. There is great T-Mobile service in the park. We stayed in a deluxe yurt which was super nice. Each deluxe yurt has three full size beds and a twin sized upper bunk, two desks, a coffee table, dining table with four chairs, microwave, full size fridge, two heaters, a fan and ceiling fan, ample outlets, a grill, picnic table, fire pit, tv, dvd player, and bathroom with shower. You need to bring your own bedding, towels, soap for the bathroom and dishes, and cooking/eating equipment. They also have carts to move all of your stuff from your car to the yurt. It takes less than a minute to walk from the yurt to the lake. The lake has a trail around it that is 1 mile long with an option to add about .25 miles to the dunes if you wish. On the walk you'll find many different picnic tables and benches to enjoy. The walk is flat with a nice wide trail, some sections are even paved. There was one section that was way too muddy to cross, but if you had good boots or it hadn't been raining all day you would be fine. There is also a sandy beach area of the lake with parking and bathrooms right beside it and a view of the lighthouse. If you want to go to the beach you'll have to drive there or walk through the dunes for a long time. There are plenty of sandy beaches around the area. I would highly recommend this park for...
Read moreThe delux yurts are the place to be. The park itself is really nice and the campsites are separated just enough to enjoy some privacy as well as nature itself. The Delux yurts are a tad on top of El each other with much less privacy. They are set up in 2 rows. A back row and the front row facing the lake. The front row has some amazing views and decks over looking the water with a bit more privacy. With that said the back row last yurt has the most space to move around since it’s the last in the rows and has extra land. So if you have kids that like to play I would pick the last one. If I was looking for a cozy weekend on the deck watching the water and the views I would pick the front row facing the water. Only two yurts allow dogs so watch for that if you have one. We didn’t notice it until we got there but once we realized we noticed the reservations did specify just very vaguely. They book up fast and to be honest I’d rather stay in the stormy months because it’s such a cozy place to be. There is a bay and docks to crab near by and shopping a long stroll or a quick drive down the road. You have to see the lighthouse at night. During the day it isn’t much to look at compared to the evening when the lights turn on.
Make sure you read all the things written under the bunk beds. It’s...
Read moreWe stayed at the campground this past weekend (February). Although it was cloudy, rainy, and windy, the campground was pretty empty and enjoyable.
We booked a cabin site, which was simple and cozy. The cabin has two beds, two chairs, and one table. That’s it. Just the essentials for sleeping. It does have an electric heater which was perfect for this time of the year. Our friends slept in the cabin, while my wife and I decided to sleep in the tent. The campsite also had a bench and a campfire ring. We had to move the bench in order to fit our tent, but it worked out.
The campground has a trail that loops around Lake Marie, which is nice if you want to walk around and take in the beautiful landscape. You could also walk to the light house if you’d like, but we chose to drive instead.
The bathrooms near our site were very clean, stocked, heated, and well lit with running water. There were also showers available.
I’m not sure how crazy it gets during the warmer months, but we definitely enjoyed our stay and would come back another time.
They also have some “deluxe” yurts for rent, which have a TV, their own shower, and other cool things for a more comfortable stay. Maybe we’ll try one of those...
