They definitely need to maintain these trails better. Granted it's hiking so there are a ton of rocks and roots consistently throughout the trail. Bugs galore. Even with bug spray forget it. Thankfully I had a mosquito jacket. There's a few signs throughout, but definitely not enough. In fact they need to put a few more exit / parking lot signs.. ... If you don't know the trail even though it's small you can very easily get lost on some of the side trails..... This state forest needs to be much better marked throughout. I don't know if there's another parking lot or not, we parked on Peck Street. It's not really a parking lot at all it's just a little dirt road with a little turnaround at the end. I would not even call this place good for dogs unless you don't care that they're covered in ticks. Definitely is not little kid friendly..... Older kids yes. It's too bad they don't maintain the...
Read moreI wanted to update this... last week I ran into a family that brought their very young child (still rides in a car seat) and I am guessing 8 week old puppy. Honestly, this is not a good place to bring kids, nor should a puppy that young that isn't fully vaccinated be out in the world free like that. The majority of people I run into have dogs, large dogs that aren't trained or socialized well. My dogs have even been attacked while we were hiking there by a woman's dog's. She had no control over them, nor did she even seem to care. Please, do not bring your young children, it's just not safe. Go to a "must be leashed" park.
It is very muddy and swampy. There are mosquitoes even in the dead of winter, so might I can't imagine how many there will be over the summer. Most people are there walking their dogs. Make sure you bring wet wipes for your dogs and make sure you wear...
Read moreA short and buggy (almost had to put spray in my ears) walk (August 2023) in town #142 in my goal towards hiking in every city and town in Massachusetts. Parked in the “lot” off Peck Street, walked from the gate and did a counterclockwise on the Pine Loop trail. The Cedar Swap Spur was too muddy to attempt. Small / nice place, very rocky...
