This would be a pretty decent state park... if it had normal hours like the other state parks. I thought the strange 5 PM closing time was only a function of the early days of the pandemic, but now the website says this is a permanent, year-round thing. I didn't recall such an early closing time pre-pandemic, when I went disc golfing with my friend at the park after work.
Lovely boardwalk over the low-lying areas that lead to the Haw River (though, not easy to find on your first time out). Just wish I had time to enjoy it- morning people, this may be your park but it certainly is not for people who enjoy the late afternoons.
Mediocre disc golf course on site, area is very humid and brutal in the summer throughout entire park. Mediocre trails as well.
It's one thing to have weird early closing times... its another thing to be absolutist about them. I've headed out of state parks before at around closing times, or even after closing times, but have never been locked in before... this is what happened to me here in summer 2020. I even drove past the park ranger on the way in who clearly saw me arriving about an hour before closing and didn't say anything to me, like a warning about closing or anything. I returned to my car and found a note saying they were 'looking for me' to 'make sure I was ok.' Of course I'm ok, I'm enjoying this park or at least trying to! I arrive at the gate to find it locked, and then had to call them and they held me hostage at the gate with a lecture about their strange hours... I wasn't entirely sure if they'd even let me out or keep me stuck there. These hours, for whatever reason, only apply to 'The Summit,' or the part with the disc golf course and the boardwalk (and the Haw River for which it's named).
Seriously, don't bother with this park. It's not much and I really just gave it a try for disc golf and to try somewhere new. Their obsession with rushing people out or locking them in, with strange early hours, is just too much. I mean, who in the summer months wants to come out for the hottest part of the day and rush in and out, seeing not much of anything? 5 PM is an obscene closing time even for winter, let alone summer. Usually closing times stagger with the seasons, being perhaps 6:30 PM in the heart of winter, 8 PM in March-May, and 9 PM in the summer. Nope, not here.
Believe it or not, I actually DO want to go back... I'm just afraid to. It's always fun to add new disc golf courses into the mix, but not only that, humid swamp areas are really cool to me, so I like the boardwalk and such. The boardwalk is just quite a long walk. It's just an open park and could be so much better... if you could actually have time to enjoy it. I'd give it 3 stars or maybe more if they weren't so nutty about hours and enforcing them. This is a park we pay for with tax dollars and so it should actually be open TO us. I wish they'd be open for compromise, at The Summit. This place has great potential as a pastoral and serene resting place for the...
Read moreThis state park is geared towards environmental education. There is a conference center and welcome building/office for this. When I was here there were events/staycations going on in the conference center.
I usually come to state parks for trails and the ones here are very easy. All are even laterally and with very few hills. The Lake Loop Trail is exactly what it sounds like, a trail around the lake. Easy and .6 miles. Mostly gravel. The Piedmont Loop Trail is also easy and short at 1.4 miles. It is well maintained, a mix of grass, gravel, clay, straw, and has a couple of bridges. It loops around everything and also takes you to the Wetlands Boardwalk Trail. The boardwalk takes you through swampy area (but flowing) and eventually to a pier-like thing that meets the Haw River. All trails start to the left of the office building.
The cabins look interesting and I wish I knew more about them. You can picnic at several spots, play disc golf, and swim. Canoeing is available on the lake.
I don't like the 8-5 hours and this is the only state park I know that has this. Why? I can see winter months but warmer months this makes no sense to me.
This isn't my favorite state park but I do like the boardwalk swampy Haw River area. This park would be great for families with children for the easy trails and the...
Read moreNot a real state park because it is not open to the public...yet we pay taxpayer money to keep it running. I called in the morning on Memorial Day to ask if they had shelters and grills we could use. The lady said yes, that is the only thing we could use other than the trails because the other facilities are for guests only. So we drove almost 45 minutes to get there. Then when we arrived, I was told that nothing at the park could be used except by the "guests". She was not apologetic nor did she even admit that she made a mistake on the phone. She was just told this by a ranger after we called. She never tried to call me back before we made the really long drive out there. She just didn't care. Nobody was willing to budge on the rule even though they had made a huge error and we had to just leave and try to find something else. Our Memorial...
