I grew up very nearby to the gorge. My friends and I swam there ALL THE TIME, because it is such a beautiful local treasure. If you're into 10-30' cliff jumps, the gorge has got some 'daring' options. Water is super clear, and very refreshing.
Upper and lower gorge is recommended for kids and inexperienced swimmers. The risk of undercurrents is almost nonexistent.
The heart of the gorge is the danger zone.
This place is not for everyone. You need to be hyper aware of water level, and monitor currents as you swim around. I've seen someone drown here. From what I remember, someone has died here almost every summer.
That being said, in my hundreds of times swimming in all areas of the gorge, I have never experienced a stronger current than I could handle.

Read moreThis is a really awesome spot to go see some ripping waterfalls. You can see where the rocks are carved out from the constant power of the water and the rocks have cool coloration. It's a very short walk from the parking lot and it's just on the side of the road. This is not a hike and definitely a roadside attraction. The road up to it is dirt but you could drive any vehicle up the road without any issue and it's free to see and park. Definitely worth the detour to see this really...
