The visitor's center is nice! We drove up to the top of Roan Mountain, and then stopped in at the Gristmill Visitor Center on the way back last weekend. We decided to walk the Cloudland Trail which is a little steep going up and coming down, but worth the hike to see several large formations of rock outcroppings. They have gem mining but it is currently closed for renovations. The gift shop has some basic camping/hiking gear. A cooler with drinks and ice cream. There is a kids section.
