The visitor's center is nice! We drove up to the top of Roan Mountain, and then stopped in at the Gristmill Visitor Center on the way back last weekend. We decided to walk the Cloudland Trail which is a little steep going up and coming down, but worth the hike to see several large formations of rock outcroppings. The little Iron Ore museum was a treat too! Love the Doe River mountain stream that runs through the area, and we glimpsed some beautiful fall leaves. Highly...

This is a wonderful visitors center. You walk across a bridge over the river and there is a working water wheel. There are bathrooms available under the wide porch. They have gem mining but it is currently closed for renovations. The gift shop has some basic camping/hiking gear. A cooler with drinks and ice cream. There is a kids section. You can get Christmas ornaments and tshirts. At the register there are stickers. The staff are friendly...

Friendly and informative group of individuals at this visitors center. They recommended some roads to explore on the motorcycle which turned out to be a blast both in car and on the motorcycle. Beautiful ride on a very well maintained fire Service road (FS 50 connected from Dennis cove road or walnut mountain road).

This is one of our favorite centers. The setting is perfect and location is convenient. The center features an old mill which has been converted into a museum of sorts. The gift shop has plenty of AT related merchandise. The staff are friendly & helpful. There are clean restrooms, a nice porch to sit on and rock, and a couple of short hiking trails. Wheelchair accessible.
