Fort Raleigh National Historic Site is a captivating historical gem located on Roanoke Island, NC, and it’s a must-visit for history enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. The site immerses you in the mystery of the Lost Colony, where the first English settlers vanished without a trace over 400 years ago. The interpretive exhibits in the visitor center are top-notch, offering a well-balanced blend of interactive displays, original artifacts, and detailed narratives that help unravel the complexities of early colonial life and the efforts to establish a permanent English presence in the New World.

What sets Fort Raleigh apart is its serene setting and well-preserved grounds. The Elizabethan Gardens, adjacent to the historic site, provide a tranquil space to reflect while strolling through beautifully maintained flora. For those looking for more active exploration, the walking trails are scenic and peaceful, winding through maritime forests and offering glimpses of Albemarle Sound.

A highlight is the seasonal outdoor drama, The Lost Colony, which brings history to life through professional, engaging performances. Parking is convenient, and the site is free to enter, making it both accessible and budget-friendly. Overall, Fort Raleigh is an enriching experience, offering an excellent balance of natural beauty and historical intrigue. Highly recommend spending at least a few hours to soak in the full scope of this...

This review covers a couple of different visits because there is so much to do and see - the replicas of the Indian compound, settlers' fort and Elizabethan ship; the visitors center; and the Lost Colony amphitheater and play. Couldn't do it all on one visit but highly recommend it all. The re-enactors at the settlement and ship were wonderful, very engaging, interesting, informative and willing to answer all questions about their areas. The play is well done, enthusiastic, engaging, a little kitschy but not overly so, a little long for me, but I enjoyed it. The backstage tour, extra cost, was fun with our two cast member guides and was worth the minor added cost. It's a fun family thing for elementary and older children (littler ones may get antsy though I saw a couple of maybe 5s who did fine). Wear comfortable clothes as you will be outside but the theater has individual seats, not benches, so it's...

Take the tour and the story really connects with other famous parts of history. There are really three colonies with the last one being the “lost colony”. Our tour guide was a phenomenal story teller and I wish I could have found him afterwards to tell him that. Took three kids in a hot July day and they were all entertained. Earned the Junior Ranger badge too which was quite challenging for all of us.
