I visited the historic Daniel Boone Homestead for the first time on Saturday October 26, 2019. I recently purchased a new lens for my camera and I wanted to break it in so I chose this location to give it a try. I was not disappointed in what I saw. My first stop was the red building which is the visitors center. I paid for the self-guided tour and I received a map. Before going off on my journey I viewed a brief video about the site and its namesake. There is a gift shop inside the visitors center. I was facinated by the colorful early American buildings. Unfortunately there was no real fall colors because of the many pine trees on the property. The trails are stone covered which can be a little difficult to walk on but at least the trails are not muddy. Be sure to check out the dam and the very muddy lake behind it, plus the grave site nearby. What was most enjoyable about my visit was how quiet and peaceful the homestead grounds were. The only noise I heard was an occasional airplane, a few birds, and the waterfalls. What an enjoyable afternoon it was at my visit to the Daniel Boone Homestead in Berks County Pennsylvania.

This site is somewhat dogfriendly. Not really that dogfriendly. I drove 130 miles to this homestead to only learn that dogs are not allowed in the village area but they are allowed outside where the saw mill and other not as interesting buildings are. The lady at the visitor center was helpful and informative. She was very nice to let me get close enough to take a few photos of the village from outside the fence. The village area is where a large number of historic buildings and the sheep are located. The trails are covered with rocks that can be difficult to walk on. My little dogs avoided walking on them. There are many area for picnic with picnic tables. Apparently, one if the trails leads to a lake on the property, but I didn't make it there. There is no restrooms except for the large, handicap portable potty in parking lot. There was a roll of toilet paper. Recommend bringing some toilet paper and hand sanitizer.

A beautiful, clean park. However, I was disappointed because you get the impression that you are looking at his home. Instead, it’s a house built on the foundation of the original house. So, when you go, understand you are looking at structures that may have been moved to the park OR structures of an era later than that of Boone, very nicely restored. Self guided tour will not allow you into some of the structures. The guided tour is suppose to allow you access. Because it is a Commonwealth park, there is a small fee for access to the park and a bit more will you to be guided on a 45” tour. Currently, if you are coming from US 422, do not follow Google Maps. When you come around the corner, there is a right turn lane to allow you to access to the park. There is ‘No Left Turn’ going northbound.

Really glad the visitor center is open again, with great exhibits, an enjoyable ten minute film, and some of the historical reenactor volunteers are here today. I especially missed the living history events and the very knowledgeable people being here for a few years, due to the changeover from previous funding arrangements and covid restrictions. I got to speak to three history guys today, who were in costume. This place is always truly beautiful, year round, and it's a perfect spring day today. I remember them from the last two times I enjoyed a public event here, which was the year before covid. I am really glad Pennsylvania still has this beautiful place, and that good events are again being held here. Update April 24. Gate locked today, many people were coming to walk, plus a small homeschooling group which had planned an activity. Nobody knew why gate was not open so most left. Several waited awhile at entrance. Perfect day to be at the beautiful grounds. You can still walk the grounds when this happens but you cannot drive in. Disappointing when this happens, that's all. Makes it harder to enjoy the grounds, or use one of the...
