My friend and I have been going to a lot of the gardens in the Philadelphia area. I don't just appreciate the ornamental gardens like Longwood or Nemours estate, I also enjoy the wild gardens using native plants like Wintertur so coming to Welkinweir I expected a smaller version of a wild garden. Unfortunately they seem to be missing the energy maybe? The paths aren't marked and we couldn't even find the area to get the the oak (?) grove. Things were barely mowed and considering you are trying to get around through the grass that wouldn't be good for anyone with walking issues. It seems like the only areas they were maintaining were those being used for weddings. Perhaps that is where their focus is now, in which case I think I'd remove them from the 30 gardens in 30 miles of philly. All in all a disappointment and I don't usually say that about gardens, especially when they are free but frankly, it wasn't...

The Welkinweir Estate is the most stunning venue for an outdoor/nature wedding! The main ceremony location is like a secret garden - everywhere you look is more gorgeous and breath taking than the next. The reception is under a tent with the stone home on 1 side and a stunning meadow as the backdrop behind the tent. The tent has clear ceiling so you can see the stars as you dance the night away. The tables are rustic farm tables that really tie all the natural elements together. The food is catered by JAM Catering, they incorporate a natural, farm to table vibe with unique dishes that compliment the venue, along with being delicious and flavorful. I just love this venue, wish I could...

We visited this free, dog-friendly arboretum on a hot summer day and had the trails to ourselves. On the Great Pond trail, we were greeted by swallowtail butterfly varieties feasting on wildflowers. The bridge leads to a rare chestnut grove and a planting of different pine trees. The springhouse and barn ruins are worth a stop. There are only portapotties and few picnic tables. Welkinweir's historic Estate House is often rented for weddings and special events. The parking lot is fairly small...

Welkinweir Arboretum is a great place to enjoy nature with the opportunity to learn plant names from the many plant groups which have labels posted by them. Welkinweir's trail system is closed after 4pm Monday through Friday and is closed on weekends. Weekends are reserved for weddings, receptions and other special private events.
