As a botany enthusiast, I am so so SO impressed at all of the oak savanna restoration work that has gone on here. Seeing the stumps from the old pine plantations and recent burn scars might upset some of the more botanically ignorant visitors, but this work is hugely important and appears to be turning out great so far. These oak savanna ecosystems used to be widespread throughout Southern Michigan, but today are reduced to fractions of breadcrumbs of their original range. The work done to restore this imperiled ecosystem is so amazing to see, and gives me hope that more work can be done like this especially considering that pretty much all of the present oak forests in this area used to be savannas as well.
