I grew up near State Hill as we used to call it before it was turned into a beautiful park now known as Quarry Hill. The caves were all open back then, and occasionally, you'd come across a wandering patient (or so we thought) from the State hospital next door. The Federal Medical Center now occupies that site. Lots of fun growing up there, fossil hunting, playing in the caves, jumping off the bridge into Silver Creek (it was deeper then). Lately, I've been hiking from Parkwood Hills to the Nature Center and back. Usually, on the ski trails before they close them to hikers in the Winter. It's always a fun hike. 🙂

Quarry Hill Park in Rochester, MN is a wonderful treasure for nature lovers, offering a beautiful blend of scenic trails, peaceful woodlands, and open spaces perfect for walking, hiking, or simply relaxing outdoors. The park is exceptionally well-maintained, making it an inviting spot for families, fitness enthusiasts, and anyone looking to connect with nature. With its diverse wildlife, educational opportunities at the nature center, and tranquil surroundings, Quarry Hill Park provides a refreshing escape from the city and a place where visitors can enjoy both adventure and serenity.

A wonderful nature center that offers a great FREE afternoon of fun, learning, and exercise. Everything their was clean, well maintained, and informative! My 5 and 11 year old spent a hour just checking out the fish, amphibians, birds, snakes, and insects. The trails outside were very nice and vary in difficulties. We did pay $4 a person to go on the cave tour. The tour guide was very nice and informative. The cave was interesting since it is man-made and offered a very interesting historical context to the area. A must visit if your hanging out for a few days in Rochester.
