I grew up there with my grandparents and many other family members who lived there in the lot cabin while my grandpa was head guy for the forest preserve. I was raised to love the outdoors and nature as my grandparents had an excellent garden to eat fresh daily. We also encountered and made pets with turkeys, baby raccoons, frogs on the limestone steps, seen numerous deer and birds chipmunks squirrels eating from the feeders my grandparents had set up in the back of the house. The smell of the fresh rain mixed with the smell of one of my grandparents cooking usually with a celery base , that smell is unforgettable. The park was always well maintained with flowers and fresh cut grass and lots of it. Accent wood fencing in certain spots. & The park itself in my day had 2 playgrounds & many well water pumps a gazebo and lots of green grass with picnic tables everywhere. All of that is Something you don't see now. Which is depressing. Had a baseball diamond and lots of room for fun setups like volleyball or baseball or football. Now it's very scarce on the grass there's more weeds and "praire" then there is room for visitors and picnics and fun. It's sad to see the way it's kept now. I don't like it. And my grandpa who lived there for well more than 30 years wouldn't like this day in the park either. He worked hard daily to keep it nice and now it's hardly touched. What a shame. RIP Larry Mcgonigal! Your missed. And your love and caring touch at the park is...
Read moreThis is a great place to visit, sight see, or just plain ole venture around. It's quiet, and a relaxing treat to anyone who enters into the massive domain. They have parking at multiple spots, and restrooms scattered about in-case of dire emergencies. The walking path is nice, but needs a bit tidying up in some spaces. You are able to drive through the park, and park at the different spots without paying a toll, and to gain easier access to the innards of the park. They have numerous spots where you can go to set up camp, and/or have cookouts with your friends/family. They have a few paths that are a little hidden, and sync up with the rest of the openings of the park in-case you want to practice being a ninja. They do have a playground area, and a big open field for kids, and adults to enjoy. There are a few spots that are iffy in the park which should be avoided because of any flooding the park might receive. If you reach the areas you'll notice them, and decide to head back. It's just a small portion, so it doesn't take away the fun factor of this awesome location. This superb locale is a definite destination to encounter whenever any free...
Read moreMy family has been camping there since it has been open for camping. Absolutely love this place. The hostess Sandra was wonderful with us. We had a group come in from out of town and was very disrespectful to the other camper's, by playing loud music and then proceeding with cutting down the trees in there area. She was very nice in telling them they were not allowed to do that. I'm looking forward to going back and enjoying the peace and quiet and watching all of nature's creatures move around. The only complaint I have is that some of the campsites lost electricity seeing I have a RV There's only a few spots that I can get into with it. And some of them don't have electricity in them for the moment. Hope they are able to get it fixed by...
