We recently stayed at a hotel in the Rockville Town Square for almost a month. The Rockville area is new to us and the first week it was a fun place to hang out. Then the "rose colored glasses" come off. As this is a condo/apartment community that is pet friendly there are only a few places for your pet to use the bathroom. The popular spot being behind the Palladian. Be careful back there as you'll see that some pet owners are not cleaning up after their dogs and neither is anyone managing the area. There was even some on the driveway entrance to the garage, rolled over and there for almost a week. Now, as much as we hate when pet owners don't pick up after their pets, how do I blame them when there are hardly any trash cans and you have to walk out of your way to get to one? You'll start to notice the cigarette butts too, but take a look around, there's no convenient garbage cans. As you'll see a majority of them are right by the entrance of some restaurants. As an owner I wouldn't want the smell of "poop bags" to be the first thing my customers encounter walking in and out of my establishment. After we arrived here a window broke at the Upton Apartments. Glass everywhere on the sidewalk. Three weeks later, there's still a lot there. We're not talking sliver-like pieces in a small area. So much you cross the street to not step in it. You definitely can't walk your pet there. I have never visited a town square/center that allowed patrons to bicycle and skate board on the side walks. A few times as I came around a corner I had to quickly get out of the way to avoid getting hit. Don't get me wrong, there are a few good restaurants, but there's no shopping, you have to either meter park for a maximum of an hour or get your parking garage ticket validated at an establishment that you go to and it's for a maximum stay for two hours. Unfortunately, the movie theater does not validate. I can tell you that in the entire life of the Internet I may have written 5 reviews online. I'm not considered a "complainer". Ultimately, I hope that someone who has some authority reads this and hopefully makes some changes. For those of you not wanting to wait for drinks or food, no matter what day of the week or what time of the day or night, there's never been a wait. Friday and Saturday nights included. Why would there be if the parking time...
Read moreThis is plain, generic "town center", which sadly replaced the actual Rockville, is not a draw. The original Rockville, which was mercilessly ripped out in 1965, was tragically replaced with a few acres of square, windowless, ugly, brutalist concrete mall that never quite caught on, lacking a quality anchor store. Known not-so-lovingly as the Crypt at Courthouse Square, this empty, creepy eyesore stood embarrassingly where a town once stood. In the 1980s, a wrecking ball was smashed against the side of the mall, barely making a dent, but beginning the slow crawl toward the new Rockville Town Square. A few generic apartment buildings/businesses and a couple of parking garages later, and we have Plain Town McCenter. If Montgomery County thought before it lept, we could have a gem like Frederick MD. Instead, thousands of down-county residents head north to Frederick every weekend, speeding right past Rockville. Rockville has nothing to offer that's new and different. If you want a huge Town Center filled with new stores, Frederick has it. If you want a beautiful downtown that's old and charming, that's Frederick. Rockville has none of that. It's too small to compete with Frederick's huge town centers, and it's too new to even begin to compare to Frederick's charming and authentic old town. A swing and a...
Read moreRockville Town Square is a multi-use place which includes public entertainment and food establishments as well as a County Library and a mish-mash of other buildings, stores, and facilities. Unfortunately, the rather small-to-moderate area seems to suffer from this identity crisis with a turnover of restaurants and stores. I am never sure, when I visit this location, whether or not the restaurant or store that I had visited before will still be there. The area appears a bit dark due to the narrow streets between the tall buildings, including a very nearby hotel and condo/apartment buildings above the stores and restaurants. Another drawback for me has been the relatively sparse on-street and the more extensive garage and underground parking which offers only a few hours free before hourly charges. On-street parking is metered,...
