Of all of the lighthouses we visited along this section of the Huron coast, this lighthouse has the potential of being a great whole day visit. Of course you could stop by, tour the lighthouse and keeper’s house and leave in short order, but the beach and grounds at this site are gorgeous. In my opinion, the views and beach at this lighthouse site are superior to what’s available at the many roadside pullouts and picket parks. There is also an unexpected bonus to be had here - the pilot house of a laker commercial ship has been set up for visitors to enter and learn more about regional shipping and the history of calcite mining in nearby Rogers City. I can’t recommend this historic site highly enough. I’d also like to the thank the volunteers that help visitors interpret and enjoy the site - their care and expertise is evident in everything you’ll see...
Read moreBeautiful historical lighthouse on Lake Huron. While the oil lamp has been replaced by an electric bulb, The original fresnel lens is still used to this day, to focus the light out into the lake... All the buildings have been restored, and able to be visited. The volunteer "Keeper Crew" are knowledgeable in the history of the lighthouse grounds, the shipwreck just off the beach (about a 995 foot distance swim), and love to give group tours. It is free to visit, and tours are also free.. The volunteers along with myself, would encourage that you please make a few dollars donation if you're able, to help cover the maintenance costs for the lighthouse...... Hope you all have a...
Read moreA great bike ride from Rogers City to the light. It's about 8 miles one way. All relatively flat and paved trail with 3 rest rooms on the way and lots of places to stop and enjoy the view and water. If you want a shorter ride, there are plenty of places to pull over and start from. Lighthouse is cool because you can go inside and actually go up the steep spiral staircase to the working lantern room. Free admission, gift shop, and access to the beach. Plus, the wheelhouse of an old steam ship there and you can go inside. Total trip time for us was about 4 hours. Great way to tie some history with excersie and...
