This is a great hike and the area around Split Rock has a lot of vegetation. If you do the loop around Balancing Rock and Sandstone Peak, it will be about 7 miles total. Depending on the direction you come from this is either about 1/3 of the way or 2/3 of the way. There is a picnic bench (not well maintained) where you can stop and relax in some shade. There was also a small stream with some water in it nearby. A few hikers on the trail said they say a rattlesnake near the trail so be vigilant and smart.

The once thick canopy of oak is thinned from the November 2018 Woolsey Fire. The picnic table that for many years sat in near complete shade, is in almost full sun and half burned away. Fallen and charred oak adorn the ground, where new plants take hold. The surviving oaks have new growth, and are filling out, but have decades to go before resembling what once was. The large namesake rock remains perfectly split in three, and completely unfazed by the aforementioned changes.

Interesting place. A big rock split into three parts. You can even walk right through it 😁

Roughly the halfway point of the Mishe Mokwa loop to Sandstone Peak, this is a great place to enjoy a packs-off break. There's a picnic bench and plenty of shade. There's also a seasonal creek that runs...
