June 12, 2022 ( update) . . . French Mountain is a wonderful hiking experience with great views in the Belgrade Lakes Region. Located in Rome ( Maine) off Rt. 27, eastern side of Watson Pond Road . . . all ages will enjoy this moderately easy trail loop!
In 2021, I’d rate this a solid 4.7 experience hiking French Mountain. Took me about 30 minutes to reach the 716 ft. peak! The million $ views include Great Pond, North Pond, Long Pond, and Whittier Pond. Several vantage points at the peak for bird watching, and camera shots of the lakes. Careful with kids, especially with drop offs near the rock ledges at the peak!
My wife & I hiked this June 12, 2022, it’s a 1.2 mile loop trail. . . She spotted a Red Shouldered Hawk!

Read moreVery easy hike with beautiful views of both the Long and Great Ponds. The trail is well kept and marked. For trail runners, it's like a track made just for us. There's enough elevation change within the 1.25k loop to make for a great technical workout. To get any distance in, you'd have to be willing to do a few laps. Four makes for just over 5k. The woods are as gorgeous as the views, so my pup and I have no problem repeatedly running the little mountain. Usually enough parking, and never...
Read moreMy husband proposed to me at the top of the mountain! We discovered the trail in 2011 while searching for a u-pick strawberry place. We saw the trail entrance and decided to check it out. It became our special hike. On our fifth anniversary (of dating) we went for a hike and to my complete surprise he went down on one knee and the rest is...
