What a fun place! For those of us that don't tolerate cold near freezing water, this was a treat! The water was a comfortable 78-80 degrees ( I'm guessing). There's enough activities to put a 12 year old to bed early from happy exhaustion. It would rate 5 stars except for the cons like listed below:
Pros: Need reservation for all activities which keeps lines short. Lots of activities for kids of all ages. A nice sandy beach with access to water for swimming. Water is a comfortable temperature. Staff was nice and helpful when asked. Overall nice, clean place with lots of smiles.
Cons: Pricey! You have to add things Zipline, hamster wheel & ninja Race course when making reservations. You can't add once you're there. I added everything to the aquapark and it turns out my kid and friend were happy with just doing the aquapark (each session is 45 mins) and swimming at the beach. They did Zipline once because I insisted they try it. So that was almost a hundred dollars I didn't need to spend ( for two people). You can add on Zipline or other things individually, but I chose to get the " and more" because I had a deprived childhood lol. I understand why they do it this way but it would be nice to have the option to add on once there.
This is the biggest con: I opted to get a small cabana which gave us ( the other mom and I) some shade and access to VIP beach. It gives access for 3 people. This meant, since we had 2 kids with us, that only one kid could come talk to us on beach or have a snack or rest whatever. 3 is such an odd number ( literally) since most people bring at least 2 kids. This meant we had to walk outside the VIP area to talk to the kids or give them water etc. Weird. And inconvenient. 4 makes a lot more sense. This was for the small cabana. There are other limits for the large cabana and floating cabana. In all fairness, they do state that the small cabana gives access to 3 people on the website but I thought that meant 3 chairs. I'm dumb I guess or hopeful but definitely wrong!
Alternatively, you are allowed to bring your own shade structures like EZ Up for the regular beach on the other side. And that beach actually looked nicer than the VIP beach.
We weren't guided or given direction to where we needed to go after we checked in. But once we asked, we got to where we needed to go.
Cost of food and drink was expensive but that's anywhere you go. You cannot bring in your own food or drink. However, no one checked our bags so we were able to bring in our own water and juice packs and crackers etc. Just don't be obvious.
I hated getting on scale for Zipline in front of God and everyone but it is necessary so no discounted stars for that.
Overall, I would visit again and we did have a lot of fun and good...
Read moreThis place was awesome!!!! The blue water was a great touch. Next time I would definitely want to book training for the wake boarding, it looked really fun but we weren't able to do it this time. The owner, Noel, came by and talked to us at our cabana, and as we were recovering from the Ninja race course. It's definitely an oasis here in the region.
We did an hour long session on the inflatables and man was I tired. If you want to have grip, you can wear the grip socks or I saw some people wearing water-shoes. But it's really fun otherwise to slip around especially when you're with a group of friends.
The pizza was really good, we also ordered the loaded fries (forget the actual name), some dibs, chicken strips, a few beers (which have to be consumed/enjoyed near the food area). It was all really good, I'd say the fries had a little extra salt on them, so be weary of that or just ask for light salt. They also do pitchers of soda and water, which was great. Food and drinks aside from alcohol are allowed back at the cabanas.
The cabanas were awesome. They had tables and seating. Some things that could be useful are like towel hooks or somewhere to hang the life vests while you're taking a break. The cabana also has a wall on the backside, and a screen on each side, that can be rolled down to keep the sun out. But each cabana DOES have an Asian broom, good for sweeping away the sand from the beach. The sand gets really hot, at least for me, so it's useful to have flip-flops/sandals.
Overall, it was a really fun experience. So much fun that we were so tired, we didn't do the hamster wheels. Definitely recommended by friends to focus on one activity, otherwise, you might be...
Read moreI was a little wary that Wake Island was a fake business that Groupon was advertising (they've had some shady offers - like the Aviation deal where you fly a jet plane, and it turned out to be a scam!).
I couldn't resist booking this Groupon, and had such a blast, that I booked another Living Social deal when it came out.
HOW IT WORKS: Wake Island has 2 main lakes, a main lake for "advanced" wakeboarders complete with optional jumps/boxes. One for beginners who are learning (aka 2 tower cable). Essentially, you wakeboard on a lake in circles, and you hang onto a ski cable which tugs you around it. About 4 people ride at a time, so the line can queue up especially if the riders are advanced and don't fall off quickly.
PROS: FAST - Kind of: This is a cool place to learn to do tricks, and it's awesome because multiple people can ride at once (compared to a single person in a boat-operated system). GOOD FOR BEGINNERS: If you fall, it's a quick paddle to the lake shore, and an easy walk back to the main dock. I'll warn you now, I think you need to be somewhat athletic or at least know how to snowboard in order to enjoy your time here.
CONS: UPGRADES REQUIRED: They offer add-ons like advanced boards that allow you to tie your feet securely to the board so you have extra security (I highly recommend you upgrade to). If you want to try any jumps, you need to pay $40 extra for this board. LINES CAN GET LONG: Some days you're waiting 30 minutes for your turn, and it really sucks if you're like me and barely get a full lap in before you fall. There is only one main lake with jumps.
Overall, I love Wake Island but would return only on weekdays when...
