Woods Island is a 125-acre island in Lake Champlain, off St. Albans Point (Franklin County, VT). It’s one of three island parks in that part of the lake (“inland sea”) alongside Burton Island and Knight Island.
There are five primitive tent campsites scattered around the two-mile shoreline.
Facilities are very minimal: each campsite has a fire ring and a composting toilet nearby. No potable water supply is provided. You must carry in everything you need (water, food, gear) and carry out all trash.
Reservations are required for camping; there is a minimum stay of 2 nights, a maximum of 14 nights.
There is an island loop trail (about 2 miles, easy) that circles most of Woods Island.
The natural environment is fairly wild. The island contains a variety of plant species, including ones rare or threatened in There are historical remnants: old farm machinery, foundations of a farmhouse, drainage ditches, and the earth berms of a partially built airstrip (you walk over the remnants when crossing the island) which add character.
Swimming is possible, though there are no sandy beaches (shore tends to be rocky except for one point on the east shore).
Boating and paddling in to the island is a common choice. Fishing from shore or boat is also an option.
Hiking the loop trail offers good vantage points for views of Lake Champlain,...
