Yesterday, I had the privilege of witnessing a heartwarming reunion near Hansen Bay Beach, located in St. John Virgin Island.
I met a man named Mauricio Calek, a successful Brazilian entrepreneur who has become a master carpenter, working for prestigious brands like the Ritz Carlton and Delta as well as private residential wood masterpieces.
Mauricio shared with me a remarkable story from his childhood that led to this special moment.
Years ago, when Mauricio was a young boy, he and his mother cleaned houses for a living. It was during this time that he met a legendary artist named Terry McKoy, also known as Sloop Jones.
Sloop Jones was renowned in the US Virgin Islands for his wearable art concept, having painted over 100,000 pieces ranging from T-shirts and scarves to pillowcases and canvas paintings.
Mauricio had never forgotten Sloop Jones and expressed his desire to reconnect with him after learning that he lived in St. John.
Without hesitation, we drove from the west side of the island to the east side, where Sloop Jones lives in his estate were his art studio is located.
Upon arriving, we were greeted by a charming and welcoming 70+ year-old man. Mauricio proceeded to show Sloop a picture of himself and his mother from over 30 years ago, unsure if Sloop would remember him.
To our amazement, Sloop Jones immediately recognized Mauricio by name.
As we walked around Sloop Jones' art studio, I couldn't help but feel the weight of history and resilience in the air.
Hurricanes had devastated the island and Sloop Jones' home, but his art still lives on. It was a beautiful reminder of the power of art and human connection.
This reunion was a touching reminder that time and distance cannot break the bonds of true friendship.
If you ever find yourself in the US Virgin Islands, I highly recommend visiting Sloop Jones' art studio near Hansen Bay Beach.
