My siblings and I were visiting Saint Joseph and looking for outdoor activities to do with our dogs. We chose the Remington Nature Center as our trailhead to stroll along the Saint Joseph Riverwalk, and it was a lovely outing!
The Riverwalk winds along the east bank of the Missouri River, and as we walked we were treated to beautiful views of the river, shaded by huge trees in full leaf, and serenaded by dozens of songbirds in the foliage along the trail. The city has done a great job of beautification of the area, and the place is idyllic.
After our walk, we wanted to visit the Nature Center; since dogs aren’t allowed, my sister stayed with our pets while my brother and I took a quick tour.
It’s a delightful little center, and eclectic in its offerings. It has a large freshwater aquarium, several small aquariums with exotic and local fauna, stuffed specimens of larger mammals (such as black bear, bison, and deer), one interactive area with the life cycle of water and another with sounds of the forest and prairie along with information about what animal makes them. There’s even a cool exhibit that shows the paw prints of different animals one might encounter in the region. Finally, there’s a larger exhibit that occupies several rooms and traces the history of the St Joseph area from the earliest human inhabitants through the 20th century. It was fascinating to look at all the displays and see the history of the region unfold!
The center is very user-friendly and welcomes children and groups. One of the events going on when we were there was a scavenger hunt for rubber ducks that had been stashed in strategic places throughout the center. It was great fun to see the kids searching so hard for each duck! It certainly seemed to help them focus on all the exhibits and displays.
We appreciate the work of Remington Nature Center and look forward to visiting again...
Read moreThis place is phenomenal!
It was one of those super random stops that my sister and I had made when we were waiting for our Airbnb to open. We had no idea what to expect, no idea what in the world we were getting into....
Seriously, I highly recommend this place. I realistically wish I had taken more pictures. It was so much fun. I had no idea that all the stuff we saw was going to be packed into such a building!! Of course they have taxidermy, as well as a few living animals. But they also have a ton of interactive places where you can press a button and hear the wildlife associated with whatever animal you just saw. Animal bones, gigantic fish tank.
HOWEVER!!! My favorite part out of all of it, as soon as we walked in, the people at the service desk let us know that there was a scavenger hunt. You had to find 12 stickers of a turkey vulture. Not only that! The lady told me that they change up the game every single month!!!! And there are prizes! As we walked through the building, checking out everything that we possibly could, there was also a cave entrance, of course it was man-made, however, it showed life through history. Also with interactive buttons, where you could hear what it might have been like! They had wax figures, and various settings of what it would be like for cavemen, and the first folks for pioneer age. If I lived in this town, you better believe I would be here every...
Read moreThis place is truly one of the best gems in Saint Joseph. We have been bringing my daughter here once a month for nearly three years and it never gets old. The location is right next to the Missouri River and has a gorgeous view. There is a lovely little porch with chairs and picnic tables. The center provides binoculars and books to help identify local birds.
My daughter loves the huge fish tank display of native fish. She also enjoys the tortoises and the snakes in the Snake Room. They are almost always having a scavenger hunt for the kids with prizes. Personally, I enjoy browsing the reading material in the little store and have bought several books.
There is a very detailed exhibit on the history of Saint Joseph which is really interesting. It includes details that I have not read about anywhere else. So if you enjoy history, you should definitely pay this...
