One of the best hike I have done with my 50-pound black who literally flew over those rocks at the last half a mile. The hike is beautiful, especially in the fall, not strenuous at all for the first 1.5 mile. At 0.7 to the top, it gets steep and quite rocky but very fun. Nothing anybody can’t do. I was more worried about my dog but he proved me wrong and he needed just a little help closer to the top to climb over a rocky wall. The views from the top are amazing. The actual monolith is not difficult to climb but you have to take turns cause it’s quite narrow at the top. Highly recommended. It’s about 2.2 miles from parking...

I did mcafee and dragon‘s tooth hiking in a day. After finishing mcafee I wanted to do more so here I am.

I left the parking lot around 4:45pm. Took dragon’s tooth trail on the way there. It's very easy and pleasant. Trail is wide along with streams. I finished 1.7 mile in less than 40 minutes. The rest 0.7 miles is very hard and took about 1 hr.

On the way back I took Appalachian trail. It's narrow and hard at some point, need to climb up and down the rocks. It took me about 50 minutes to finish 1.1 mile.

I was back to the parking lot at 8:15pm. I like the view at mcafee better but enjoyed more hiking itself at...

Wow. We had no idea what we were about to 'chew'. We kept thinking those scary warnings were for wimps, the uninitiated, in-firmed. We are soon to be 73 and 70 respectively. It took us over 5 hours round trip. We were pretty proud of ourselves until we got to the top and found an 80 year old felluh! Well, shoot. This hike is not easy, but we did it and the views were amazing. Maybe our last trip, but hmmm, maybe when I turn 80? Temperatures were perfect and I wonder how the family with 3 littles made it to the top. One in a carrier on mom's back! There are tough people out there. (four star rating because my...

One thing I LOVE about Virginia is how many hiking options there are! If visiting Shenandoah isn’t in the cards, or you’re just looking for something different, these are some of my favorite fall hikes outside the park: [Save for planning!] 1. 📍Mcafee Knob (Catawba, VA) 2. 📍Great Falls via Difficult Run (McLean, VA) 3. 📍Dragon’s Tooth (Catawba, VA) 4. 📍Stickler Knob (Luray, VA) 5. 📍Big Schloss via Wolf Gap (Lost City, WV- summit is in VA!) 6. 📍Duncan Knob (Luray, VA) Route info (+ more hikes) in my latest blog post or on #alltrails ! 👉🏼Have you done any of these yet? Which one will you try first!? ⚠️Please help preserve these areas by minimizing your impact when you visit. Take all waste out with you, stay on established trails, and respect other hikers!
