As someone who has lived in the Rocky Mountains and Great Smoky Mountains I would say it's a stretch to actually call this place a mountain but it is a super cool place to visit especially if you're looking for some quiet meditation space and get the city out of your head.
The short unassuming hike I'm told actually takes you up about 12 stories but you don't need any special equipment. Any skill level should make the climb without assistance. You might could also come in a motorized wheelchair depending on the condition but I wouldn't want to push anyone up it. There is a shuttle than runs in the weekends.
I never heard of this place until a few years ago and I grew up here. I don't even think my parents knew this place existed.
I did find out it was not turned into a park until 2006. I have tried for years to visit but it was always closed. I was actually headed to High Rock Lake when I decided to give it another go. Excited to say this time it was open and I had the place to myself. I met the caretaker and he was glad to have a visitor to give some great information. I loved it.
I highly recommend it to families who want to test the waters with small children to see how they would behave in an environment. Everything is fenced off so there's no chance of danger.
There are even a couple picnic tables up top where actually writing this review.
No admission, I'll come back again just a little outing by myself. Only open 4 days a week, later in the week. Operations vary by month.
Not really any signs that give much history along the hike, maybe 2-3 generic photos but a neat place to have...
Read moreThe place is great, the views are fantastic, but I really wish there was more acreage to explore, especially additional trails with less of the prison-like fencing. It's also a crying shame that the hours are so incredibly limited, especially as we head into the fall and winter and the views reach their peak, yet you can't spontaneously decide to go on a random beautiful clear weekday, because the mountain will be closed. It's "public," yet we don't have free reign to take advantage of the beauty of nature whenever it's convenient for us. I'd give it 5 stars if these issues were addressed. I would also give it 5 stars if they were allowed to do some tree pruning to open up some more epic views, but alas, as a "preserve," my understanding is their powers are limited. Rowan County needs to realize the potential here and maximize the...
Read moreIf you’re interested in a super quick and easy uphill walk this is great. But we were disappointed with this mediocre attraction. Thankfully we only drove 30 minutes and were able to hit Dan Nicholas Park afterwards otherwise is would have been a complete waste of time. The website said “trails” the plural lead us to believe there were multiple trails, however there was just one. Everything was gated which I guess I understand for safety as I’m sure people try to climb on the rocks however it really takes away from the beauty of the place. The signage explaining the history was behind the rocks was mediocre and needs an updated as it was very faded and difficult to read. If you’re interested in just a quick nature fix id say it’s an okay spot, but if you’re wanting more I would not recommend. We were...
