As an avid hiker seeking trails with scenery, I recently explored the Rand’s View hike in Falls Village, Connecticut. I started my hike from the parking area, opting for the out-and-back route that totals about 5.3 miles. For those wanting a shorter trip, there’s a 2-mile option from a nearby campground, but I recommend the longer path for a fuller experience. The trail begins with a gentle ascent through a dense forest of hardwood trees, including oaks and maples, which provide shade on warmer days. The path is well-marked with white blazes typical of the Appalachian Trail, making navigation straightforward even for beginners. the elevation gain of around 800 feet felt manageable, though it requires moderate fitness due to some rocky sections and occasional steep inclines. I encountered a few streams and wildflowers along the way, adding to the natural charm. Birdwatching was a highlight; I spotted woodpeckers and hawks. The real payoff comes at Rand’s View itself, about 2.5 miles in. Emerging from the woods into an open meadow. On a clear day, the view stretches for miles, with layers of green valleys and blue skies creating a great scene. I paused here for a picnic, enjoying the quiet breeze and the sense of accomplishment. Challenges were minimal: the trail can be muddy after rain, so waterproof boots are advisable. Bugs were present in summer, but bug spray handled that. Wildlife is abundant, so staying on the path is key to avoid ticks. The hike took me about three hours round trip, including breaks, and I felt energized rather than exhausted. Overall, Rand’s View offers a perfect blend of accessibility and beauty, ideal for families, solo hikers, or anyone craving a moderate adventure. It’s especially magical in fall when leaves turn vibrant colors or in spring with blooming meadows. If you’re in Connecticut, don’t miss this trail—it reminds you why hiking connects us to nature’s wonders. I’d rate it 4.5 out of 5 stars for its views.

Hiked the trail to the vista in January. Though the meadow wasn’t quite as vivid and luscious as the warmer months, I still highly recommend this 5.6 mile hike! Trail was well maintained the entire way, with a stop at the summit of Prospect Mountain. You follow the meandering path out of the dense woods and are treated to a jaw-dropping panoramic vista of the Berkshires. Bring a picnic blanket and some snacks, as you’ll definitely want to kick back, relax, and take in the view. The meadow just begs to be frolicked in :) Trailhead is across from Great Falls parking lot.

Hard to miss if you’re an AT thru-hiker but totally worth the 2 mile trek from the Great Falls on the Housatonic River, especially at peak foliage! You can make a loop by returning on the steep, blue blazed trail to Sugar Hill Road, but if you’re into peak bagging, might as well hike another mile to Raccoon Hill to check that off as well. Along the way, you will encounter a vertically-standing, strangely eroded rock.

My absolute FAVORITE spot to hike!! Parking by 2 secluded houses, walking up and access road to a trailhead that leads to a quaint camp + Adirondack shelter. You then cross a log bridge to the climb that will change your life - a rocky path skirting up the mountain alongside a moss-covered waterfall, all the way to the top. The trail then leads on for a couple hundred feet where you can catch your breath. The breeze will kiss your face, and the forest adventure opens to rolling fields above one of the most gorgeous mountain views in all the Northeast - Rand's View. It truly is a gem of a place, and the trail continues even further past the fields, to a huge rock that looks like a giant thumb (or something else wink wink), and disappears into a seemingly endless walk along the Appalachian Trail.

If you enjoy hiking, the outdoors, special moments in life, or just want to challenge yourself and receive one of nature's greatest rewards for it, this trail is for you. From the parking lot down the access road through the woods to the campsite across a bridge up a waterfall all to see something no human being could ever truly replicate? Now that's an adventure worth living...
