I have been to the museum many times and still want give the exhibits 5 stars, but my last experience wasn't so great. I got off work early and drove straight there so I could make it before they closed. Still in my mechanics uniform they ask who I was with. In confusion I replied that I was by myself. They proceeded to ask if I was there to inspect the building for bugs. Starting to feel embarrassed I said that I just wanted to see the museum. I got a quick reply of, you know it cost money to get in. At this point I just wanted to get away from these employees so I gave them my money, which wasn't a problem, and went to see the exhibits I came to see. On my way out I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt and talk to them about the displays and one again wasn't received well. I do plan on going back but I plan on giving it a good while in hopes these...

An unexpected find and fascinating location filled with rich history and context regarding the geological and historical significance of the tiny town of Saltville in national matters. See real molars and artifacts from the Ice Age, learn about the importance of salt in the War Between the States, see how limestone was transported across mountain ranges in "bucket lines," understand how a tiny town fortified against attack and became the center of salt mining for nearly all southern states during the war...and see how the town evolved to have the world's tallest wooden building structure, the birthplace of chlorine production, and more. Ask for a map at the front desk of the town and other locations to see the history you'll learn in action...and ask about the train display right down the street...it's pretty...

What a delightful stop off i-81 in Saltville, Virginia. I was super impressed with the details of geologic history and the interactive exhibits from prehistoric times through settlement of the valley onto the importance of the salt mines during wartime and industrialization. I was impressed with the amount of information and detailed displays including a small theater setup for a selection of films and digital presentations. The museum also showcased a temporary exhibit of The Parade of Trees. I really enjoyed viewing the different clubs and local organizations that decorated Christmas trees for display, especially the Patriot Tree. I ended my visit in the gift shop and was delighted with the variety of books, cards, and other items including a window cling sticker NaCl...

One of the best museums of its size anywhere! You will not be disappointed in this collection of this very unique little town that is built on the salt deposits from eons gone by. Mastodon and Wooly Mammoth bones are within the exhibit. This museum has a great collection of Native American and fossils from the area. This museum should be mandatory education for people who live in the area to try to understand the geological changes that shaped the area. The staff are very knowledgeable and highly invested in seeing this area being recognized for its well cataloged history. If your interested in natural history in the "Middle Appalachians", you can not go wrong with this museum. I will definitely be going back again.

Great place to visit. Educational, well rounded and varied, most important, fun. Kids love it, adults love it and adolescents can tolerate it (you know how that is). Geology, history, botany, zoology, paleontology, archaeology, anthropology and likely a few other -ologies I missed. Lots of Saltville and area information, nice helpful staff. Excellent events for everyone. What a wonderful asset for our entire area.
