Submarines, Seagulls, and Existential Dread
Welcome to Naval Base Point Loma, home of the Silent Service and the loudest seagulls on the West Coast. If you enjoy gray submarines, the constant smell of diesel, and pretending to be okay with 12-hour days underwater, you’ll fit right in.
Scenery? Absolutely stunning. You’ve got ocean views, cool coastal breezes, and the faint aroma of bilge wafting through the air like freedom’s cologne. On clear days, you can even see downtown San Diego—just far enough to remind you that civilians are out there living normal lives.
Facilities? Top-notch… if you’re into Cold War chic. Half the buildings look like they were built before disco died, and the Wi-Fi moves at periscope depth. The gym’s solid though—perfect for those trying to lift away their reenlistment regret.
Parking? It exists in theory, much like a work-life balance. You’ll find a spot eventually, usually somewhere in La Jolla.
Atmosphere? Quiet, mostly because everyone’s either at sea or too tired to talk about it. The base hums with that unique submarine energy—equal parts technical precision, mild claustrophobia, and caffeine addiction.
Wildlife? Seagulls. Aggressive, territorial, and apparently unionized. They’ll steal your sandwich, your dignity, and probably your hat. There’s also a family of raccoons that patrols near the dumpsters. They’ve been here longer than most commands.
Pros: great ocean views, decent gym, best chow this side of a submarine galley (low bar, but still).
Cons: parking purgatory, seagull harassment, and that ever-present feeling that you might actually be turning into a sea creature.
Final verdict: 4 stars. Point Loma—come for the submarines, stay because the seagulls won’t...
Read moreThis base is amazing, I was a little reluctant at first because it’s all with no C store.
After camping out at their newly designed converted RV park from a parking lot, I have definitely changed my opinion.
The Pount Loma Annex is amazing with beautiful scenery.
Customer service is good excellent Dave, Doug and Franze they are great people and the fill ins have been nice as well.
Liberty station right across the street walking distance.
They have a small nex no need to walk across the street for that.
Showers 9-4 no electric or running water but for the price it’s the best in San Diego area. I think it’s the best price and for your safety there is no price you can put on safety. It’s very safe and convenient to the airport and other HarborView places. The Midway is just about three five blocks on a range walk.
Places to eat in the area there are plenty
If you like seafood Mitch’s is awesome a locals favorite as well as Point Loma Seafoods which also has some delicious entrees and fresh seafood to buy.
Anyway you look at it “it’s a gem of a place”

Read moreFood delivery service; whatever you do, do not delivery to a “Hasan G” or “Hassan G” at the Point Loma gate at Laning ave. Delivered food today to a man matching the description given to me over the phone, thanked them for their service and went out of my way to make sure food was correct after they confirmed the food type and name to me on their order when picking up. It sounded like they called me a derogatory name for a white male as they walked off and left no tip, leaving me with $3 for 35 mins work and wasting my gas. They called me after I drove away asking where their food was and after telling them it was delivered they hung up. Bizarre and unprofessional, I expected better from our service men and women. Never delivering...
