Absolutely beautiful place. Seems to be much less crowded during the day, than at sunset. As sunset came, it went from 10-12 people to 50+. I guess this park is fairly new, as my uber driver who has property right below the park, in a valley, did not even know the park existed. There is a telescope, an amphitheater, and benches throughout. There are lunch benches, but with the high winds, I'm not sure how you could enjoy a meal without using a boulder to hold your food down. It went from a quiet space to sightsee, hike and reflect, to loud people on their phones, loud parents with loud kids throwing rocks, a couple having a romantic picnic in the back of their truck crumbling paper from the food loudly, and loud souped up cars being used for insta-photo shoots. All of which you can do absolutely nothing about. Maybe it was the Santa Anna winds, but it was also super windy. If you want peace and the ability to take a pic without people all in your space, go during the day before 5pm. Outside of that, the views are breathtaking. Mountain views all around and a great view of the ocean. You can even see Catalina island in the distance. Don't leave until you experience this. You...
Read moreMarch 2018 - An amazing place! The heart-quickening views from this awe-inspiring peak are spectacular to say the least. Southern California is a diverse place, socially and geographically, and one glance down from Double Peak is a perfect illustration of this truth. The rolling mountainous landscape tapers to foothills as the Pacific Ocean meets the coast - all wonderfully visible from this perch. At 7am, I was standing beneath the single tree on top of Double Peak enjoying the sunrise, and at 7:30am I was having breakfast on the beach! Who could ask for more?! Additionally, the Double Peak trails offer moderate to challenging treks. The drive up to and down from Double Peak intensifies the exhilaration of the overall experience while visiting this San Marcos treasure! Thank you to the San Marcos community for providing the opportunity to share in the natural beauty of this place! Always looking forward to my next visit! Read moreI believe the view would have been 5star based on other’s pictures. We were visiting from out of town, and got up early to drive in to see the sunrise. It was going to be a beautiful sunrise, but park gate was closed. Hours stated on the gate from sunrise to sunset. There were locals also waiting and we asked, and they said they had seen the sunrise multiple times, and the gate was open by this time in the morning. All of the info from the city states the official facilities aren’t open until 8am, but the gate should be open by sunrise according to the sign. Very disappointing. Assuming someone was sick or slept in to open the gate, but wish there was other info online to at least warn us about either gate times or the possibility of it not being open for sunrise. The peak itself I have no doubts would have been beautiful and 5stars, just rating our experience, and also letting others know of the possibility of the gate not being open...
