Great short hikes. We came out to Galena and my daughter was asking for a hike with some "up and down". I figured she wanted something a little rougher. I was right. She loved it. "Second best place we've been to", after Turkey Run, Indiana. Pluses: great views, decently rough trail, awesome views of the Mississippi, train line which goes by along the river (I love trains), not as many people as Starved Rock or Turkey Run (but then, we came in early Spring), bat houses. There are places where you can walk right up to the edge of the bluff... Dangerous for toddlers! But I appreciate that they didn't fence it in (yet 🙁). It's really cool. Minuses: trails seem short. Read moreVery underated state park, which gives more opportunities to be alone. The Mississippi Paiside State Park has the highest ciffs over the mighty river in Illinois. Here you can rule the word at 250 feet looking into the Wild West across. The views remain mostly like they would be seen by first explorers. The park is free. Plenty of parking. Good rest areas. Nice pick Nick place. And there are lots of eagles... Probably they are hungry for the lack...
