Great short hikes. We came out to Galena and my daughter was asking for a hike with some "up and down". I figured she wanted something a little rougher. I was right. She loved it. "Second best place we've been to", after Turkey Run, Indiana. Pluses: great views, decently rough trail, awesome views of the Mississippi, train line which goes by along the river (I love trains), not as many people as Starved Rock or Turkey Run (but then, we came in early Spring), bat houses. There are places where you can walk right up to the edge of the bluff... Dangerous for toddlers! But I appreciate that they didn't fence it in (yet 🙁). It's really cool. Minuses: trails seem short. It's a lovely place, and it gives you a feeling of stepping back in time and imagining the mighty Mississippi before white people and dams and such.

Very underated state park, which gives more opportunities to be alone. The Mississippi Paiside State Park has the highest ciffs over the mighty river in Illinois. Here you can rule the word at 250 feet looking into the Wild West across. The views remain mostly like they would be seen by first explorers. The park is free. Plenty of parking. Good rest areas. Nice pick Nick place. And there are lots of eagles... Probably they are hungry for the lack of tourists.

Well kept roads and rest areas. The overlooks provide amazing views of the river. Hiked the Sentinel and Sunset trails of the southern portion. Trails were delightfully difficult, unlike most of Illinois trails. Well marked at junctions and trailheads only. They can get steep, so have good hiking shoes. Short trails, but very much worth it.
