This is our favorite park in coastal / south GA. We have been going there for 20 years now and have done numerous day trips and camping trips. I have camped in the group pioneer sites a few times but mostly at the campground in my pop-up. The park has had some much-needed funds come in the past year or two and has put it all to great use. They tore down and rebuilt the comfort station in the campground, added a splash pad at the day-use area, filled in the neglected swimming pool so it no longer will strain the budget. They also rebuilt the fishing pier at the lake and added another for paddle boat rentals. I am sure there was other improvements but those are the ones I saw.
The lake is a nice one for canoes and kayaks. Bring your own or rent. The rental costs have gone up too but it is not too bad for some time on the water. I have never caught much fish there but I am not the best fisherman either :-). It will take you about an hour to paddle around the lake. Lots of wildlife, including several gators, mostly small but I have seen some 8 footers too.
The campground is top-notch and the new bathrooms are great, except that the showers heads spray in a circular pattern. So it is possible for you to stand directly under it and remain perfectly dry. Not a problem if you run around in a circle to get wet :-). The shower was stuck on hot too. But that was a good thing because it was hot enough to burn the hair off your face and you do not have to shave...anyway, I told the host about it all and she called maintenance.
So 5 stars from me. Go visit and support your...
Read moreMagnolia Springs is a great camping/hiking option for me since I live in southeastern Georgia and there aren't a lot of state park options available. My friends and I have been coming here for a few years now and are always happy to come back. We've always used the pioneer campsite in the past which was a great big open space for us to camp and stargaze.
This past weekend, we reserved the three walk-in sites which aren't that much of a walk and they are very well maintained. It's a great area if you and your friends want to enjoy your time together without bothering other campers. The same can be said for the pioneer site. The walk-in's each have a picnic table, a fire ring and a water hookup.
Three of our friends rented cabin #6 and that too was a nice option, especially since we booked this group outing on a weekend where we saw sleet, ice and low temps (24 degrees Sunday morning!). It was a nice refuge from the cold.
The bath house was very well maintained and pleasantly clean and warm. Y'all do a great job with cleaning. It was nice to see the park also had installed two concrete Cornhole boards. We'll keep that in mind for next time.
Between the three trails, you'll get about three miles of hiking in and there are a lot of beautiful views along the way. Be sure to go see the historical fort site and you'll learn a few things about how it was used during the war.
My next trip here, my boyfriend and I want to bring the kayaks because they have a beautiful lake and a nice launching point for small watercraft.
I would highly recommend Magnolia Springs State...
Read moreAmazing 2 days’ vacation! We rented one of the cottages, it was clean and a nice size for our family, we enjoyed grilling outside and the screened front porch as well. We completed 2 different trails, and these were nicely maintained, we also rented a paddle boat and had fun at the splash zone. Saw alligators, birds, turtles, snakes, etc. Evening fishing was very relaxing with a great scenery. We felt safe at all times, very nice rangers helped us in different occasions. My son completed their Jr. Ranger guide and was able to be sworn as a Jr. Ranger before we left! It was special for him since that is what he plans to become when he grows up. The park is 15 min away from a small grocery store and a dollar general, family stores, and some fast food chains as well. We had lunch at “The Café On Cotton” in downtown all 15 minutes from the park, very nice restaurant as well. “Splash at the Boro” water park is 30 min away. We are returning!
Update: We came back and stayed with more family in one of the renovated cabins! It was so wonderful! This park never disappoints, the cabins look amazing and super comfortable and clean! Rented bikes and explored several trails, fished, cooked outdoors, visited some stores near by in downtown Millen, beautiful historic and cozy town. This time we specially enjoyed the Charm Barn store. Park manager was very kind and helpful before our arrival, helping with the reservation, questions etc. we are most definitely coming back. Very relaxing and the most beautiful evenings by the lake. Rangers around the park super friendly and always...
