This was my first time at the park and it was a very nice trip! The part of the park I visited had both paved and gravel paths. The paved path is a small flat loop with several interpretive signs scattered alongside. Most are about various historical people and roles others played during the Civil War. However, there is very little shade over the trail, so plan accordingly.
The gravel paths are definitely interesting. They are accessed off the left side of the paved loop, not far from the parking lot and form a larger loop around the paved trail and park itself. Most of the trails forming the loop are in the forest, so they are mostly shade covered. It provided some welcomed relief when I got off the paved trail.
These graveled trails are not trails for those with very bad disabilities, but I think it will be obvious at the trailhead. They are quite steep in places and run along the tops of hollows and gullies, making for some deep drops on one side or another (However, there is little chance of falling off the trail if trail rules are followed.)
One part of the trail has a wooden bridge that crosses a small stream with a cave to one side. Another part gently meanders down into a hollow where a good size stream flows. There are also all kinds of wild flowers to be seen, especially on the small hilly meadow between the paved and gravel trails - horse nettle, wild petunia, passion flower, black eyed susans, plus some that I had never seen before.
Dumont Hill is a great place to walk and hike. Be prepared though - wear decent shoes and take some water with you. Perhaps take a snack as well, especially if you hadn't eaten in a few hours. Other than that, you should have a great time seeing a close up...

Has great playground for kids, facilities and even hammocks along walk and botonical habitats and display platforms with interesting nature themes and historical timelines. They have recently expanded park with new entrance coming and more excavated areas. Don't forget it's great place to walk the dogs and has doggie bags supplied. Take care of nature. It...
Read moreAs a first time visitor here, I was so impressed with this gem of a park.
Everything was clean, the trails are nicely marked, and taken great care of.
I loved the signs in the park showing the different animals, trees, and flowers that can be found here. The children's book on one of the trails was so sweet.
I had the trails all to myself on the day I visited, but the trails are wide enough that even if it was busy, there are so many different directions to go, that you would not feel crowded.
Probably the best hike I took on my visit to this area, and those included Mammoth Cave Park.
The care and love put into the park is not...
