The park is very nice. It's reclaimed from old mining property. It features the anthracite heritage museum and also the underground mine tour and a beautiful sculpture statue of a coal miner as they or equipped in the 1900s. This was donated by a man whose father was a miner in this area. These items alone are worth a visit if you're nearby or seeking information on this culture from a historical perspective especially those whose ancestors were involved in mining anywhere in Pennsylvania or beyond that such as West Virginia Minnesota Oklahoma and Montana...and other places as well. Nevertheless one need not be related to a mining ancestor to appreciate what miners and mining did to power the country in manufacturing and thus it's military in the 18 and 1900s. At that time this area was among the most important and wealthiest places in the country because it was providing state of the art energy to power the country.
The rest of the park is a series of walking trails most are paved as well as basketball baseball and other recreational facilities. It is best to go to the park's website to see what is current open and available.
There are many picnic tables and even charcoal grills available at times. On very busy days you may have a little trouble finding one available... But if the weather is good the grounds are a nice enough to spread a blanket and picnic on a hillside. So you can bring your own food because there is no vending of any kind in the park. The best nearby bet is a local cafe restaurant called Rich's which is only a few minutes away from the park on keyser avenue. You can look for this or other places in the area on the internet.
It is pretty convenient from both route 81 and the Northeast extension of the Pennsylvania turnpike. This makes it a good place to take a break if you're on a long trip and want to relax for a few hours and also get some walking and...

I recently had the opportunity to visit McDade Park in my hometown. Although I no longer reside in the state, I have many nieces, nephews, and friends with young children who frequently visit this park. I was disheartened to see that the playground is in a state of significant disrepair.
There are several broken and hazardous elements, including large holes and sharp, protruding plastic on the slides. The playground flooring also has extensive cracks and tears, creating tripping hazards. Most concerning is a large exposed metal pole sticking out of the ground, which poses a serious safety risk.
McDade Park was one of my favorite places to visit as a child, and it’s still one of the largest and most frequented parks in the area. It has great potential, but regular maintenance and attention to safety are essential to preserve its value for the community.
I believe the park deserves to be restored to a safe and welcoming space for children and families.
I sent a message on to the lackawanna county visitors bureau and asked for further guidance on where exactly is the right place to speak up about these issues.
I’m urging fellow parents and community members to speak up and report these issues to city and state officials. If more voices come forward, we have a better chance of getting real improvements made. This park should be a safe and enjoyable space for all families in the community.
Let’s help make...
Read moreHad a great experience at McDade with our family recently. I had never been here before and didn't realize that there was so much space available as well as a great set up for children. The facilities and area were all extremely clean and well maintained. We were able to play in the children's area, which all felt very safe (there is a soft flooring/foam-like substitute as opposed to any type of gravel or woodchips in the children's play area) as well as a small shaded sand pit for children to play in. Plenty of grass fields to have a small picnic and the pond was a small source of entertainment for us that had lily pads, frogs, and other small wildlife that is interesting to children. The walking paths were calm and there was plenty if room for us and other walkers and runners to maneuver. Best of all, there were other parents here and everyone we spoke with was friendly and welcoming. While we didnt use them, there were basketball courts as well as a bocce lane, and a small covered party area with wooden tables and benches, but I didn't check out all the amenities. Lastly, it was calm and quiet, which was surprising considering how close we were to Keyser Ave. I will be going here more frequently and would recommend it to anyone looking for a place to take their kids that have a ton of...
