Being a resident of Searsport I did so much with my family as a kid on Sears Island. Used to camp and have family outings there on the beach. Clam Banks was a big thing every summer. Back then you had to wait until the tide went down to actually drive or walk to the island. Hoping you did not get stuck on the island by the high tide. Now that the causeway is there it makes it easier now to drive up to the island. Makes a great place to walk for exercise or a family adventure . They now have trails on the island which take you to different parts of the beach. We are very fortunate to have this beautiful island for all to enjoy. And when you go there please stop and take a seat on my Uncle James Engstrom's bench that was dedicated to him. Love it hear....

I really enjoyed walking part way around the island on the beach. It was empty and peaceful.

Across the bay on one side you can see a chemical company. On the other side you can see a cargo loading dock for another industrial plant. But these are pretty far away and do not detract much from the raw natural state of the beach.

A word of warning to allergy sufferers: The paved road that runs down the middle of the island is essentially unmaintained, meaning that the edges of the pavement are think with thriving weeds, like ragweed. This is a nature preserve that is managed by a local nonprofit group. They don't have the resources of the state parks to maintain the grounds.

Also beware of deer flies...

This island is a beautiful place to get away to. There’s such a verity of wildlife there that will captivate anyone, even the least outdoors-y. It offers a lot of options for trails through the woods (careful of ticks!) and a main paved way through the heart of the island to the far side. There’s a lot of beach to choose from for swimming, and the left side has a less wavy area for kids. Be careful of high tide, though! If you’re out on the beach, be aware of the time because the beach does disappear when the tide comes in, and you’ll be stuck walking through water or woods...

Absolutely beautiful, peaceful place. There's hiking along the shore all the way round the island. Used to be during the 80s, you could drive right onto the island and dry camp and have little camp fires, and climb trees, and, well ... you know, but the combination of some people not carrying their trash out, abusing the place along with the liberals and environmentalists wanting their agenda heard, put a stop to that. You now have to park on the causeway and walk, or bike, through a barricade. No overnight camping. The local polizei won't let you even dry camp on the causeway.

Sears Island is a hidden gem on the Maine coast. It offers a perfect mix of natural beauty and accessible trails, with a main paved path that’s great for a leisurely walk or bike ride, plus plenty of offshoot trails for those looking to explore a little deeper. Even during peak summer weekends, the trails are spacious enough that it never feels crowded, allowing you to fully enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Whether you’re looking for a quiet stroll, a picnic with a view, or a bit of off-the-beaten-path adventure, Sears Island is always a great choice.
