My visit to Moose Point State Park on Memorial Day is an annual event with friends from church that has taken place nearly every year for the last 2 decades. Moose Point is located along Penobscot Bay between Searsport and Belfast, Maine, opposite Castine.
As a state park, there is a fee for admission, payable ONLY IN CASH. Children 11 and under are $1 per state resident. Ages 12 to 64 $3 per state resident. Adults 65 & older are free. Prices for nonresidents are slightly higher.
The grounds of MPSP are kept mowed by the State Park Service, and are dotted with iron grate charcoal grills for visitors to use for cookouts or picnics. There's ample space for games of frisbee, whiffleball, corn hole (bring your own set), or catch (baseball, football, etc.).
After driving thru the gate, there's a dirt drive to the left. Take that to get to a pavilion that is available to reserve for group use; it includes approximately 10 picnic tables and a sink. A bathhouse stands near the pavilion with the blessing of indoor plumbing. Not luxurious by any means, it beats using an outhouse!
Between the pavilion and the water is a small gazebo about halfway to the stairs to the 'beach'. The waterfront area is tidal, rocky, gritty, and not ideal for swimming. It IS ideal for exploration, though, and well worth the visit while at the park. If the tide is out, visitors get to see a treasure trove of marine wildlife. It's a wonderful way to spend a warm day.
As you pass through the main gate, if you continue straight on the paved drive instead of turning left down the dirt road, you'll come to a parking lot near a playground and picnic tables. From that parking lot you'll also have access to walking trails and other steps to the beach area. And there's restroom facilities near that parking lot.
Moose Point State Park offers visitors a basic structure to support self-generated activities. It has a beautiful location and is kept tidy and clean. It's a great park to visit if you're going to be in the area and want a day out or just half a day out. From May to September, in particular, the visitor to the region can also find plenty of roadside shopping at flea markets, antique shops, local eateries, and much more....

Read moreMoose Point State Park is an extremely beautiful park! Open grassy area, play ground for the kids, access to the rocky shore, many picnic tables, usually has parking closer to beach access and usually has accessible bathrooms. I say usually on the last two, parking and bathrooms as both the bathrooms and the main gate are locked, therefore the parking that is near the shore and the bathrooms is not accessible with a vehicle. Which makes the park currently unfriendly for those with mobility problems. I subtracted two stars because the website claims to be walker and wheelchair accessible but posted in no place that the main gate and bathrooms were shut. Which makes it currently very unfriendly to those with mobility problems. We drove almost two hours to get there to visit the park, just to find a gate in our way which prompted my mom to push herself to walk all the way down to the shore because she didn't want to go all that way for nothing! She spent the next three days hardly doing anything because she was too sore and tied from pushing herself to much. I would appreciate the park post somewhere on thier site that the main gate and and restrooms are closed but the public can walk into the park so people are awarethat the will be a bit of...
