A must-see location in the Seattle area is the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge (SR 520 Bridge), a real technical wonder. This unusual floating bridge, which spans Lake Washington and links Seattle with the Eastside neighborhoods, provides not only an essential transit connection but also an amazing experience for bicyclists and pedestrians. The bridge's broad bike and pedestrian walkway on the north side is one of its most notable characteristics; it's a great spot for a leisurely stroll or ride. The vistas are stunning whether you're taking a leisurely stroll or commuting. On days when the sky is clear, you can see the Olympic Range, the Cascade Mountains, and even Mount Rainier in the distance. A dreamlike experience is created by the bridge's location over Lake Washington's deep waters, particularly around sunset when the sky is illuminated with pink and orange tones. Along the route are educational boards that offer fascinating details about the bridge's design and the surrounding natural environment for individuals with an interest in geography and engineering. The bridge's distinctiveness is increased by the fact that it floats on Lake Washington, which descends more than 100 meters. The tolls can be a drawback even though the bridge is an essential route for cars, freight, and electric vehicles. You can, however, enjoy the experience for free if you're crossing on foot or by bicycle, with the exception of the hours between 1 and 3 AM, when the tolling system is suspended. More than just a road, the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge is a picturesque location that highlights Washington State's natural splendor. It is strongly advised that you take some time to appreciate the expansive views from the bridge, whether you are a...
Read moreThe old bridge was run down but lots of fun to be on during storms. The new bridge is a huge improvement but all they did was add a useless HOV lane when it needed 6 total general purpose lanes. Its nice not driving over a battered bridge I guess. The bridge is also way too dark at night, it needs better lighting, WSDOT should grow a spine and not give into the rich whiners who made them change the lighting. The toll is ridiculous and creates more traffic on the alternate routes. This section of SR520 is the only one to decrease with traffic congestion in the whole metro area, that's not to anyone's benefit though. They also eliminated the bridge being free after 11pm which was stupid because its empty after the evening rush. Good-to-Go is awful at running the toll collection system so hope they actually bill you properly or expect to fight with them. The speed limit is also ridiculously low and should be at least 60mph if not higher. Especially considering PNW drivers can't manage the speed limit and you'll get stuck behind them anyways.
Ignoring the politics, poor planning, and poor lighting the bridge offers great views on a clear day of all the surrounding mountains and cityscapes. Most locals will avoid this bridge to avoid the toll but its nice to go over now and then. I'd rate higher but the incompetence of the local and state governments is...
Read moreThe Evergreen Point Floating Bridge over Lake Washington carries motor vehicle, EV, and cargo traffic in 2 general purpose lanes and 1 carpool (3+ humans required, sorry preggo mama bears count as 1). A wide bike and run/walk path on the north side of the bridge offers a toll free way to travel between Medina and Evergreen Point to Seattle and the University of Washington's sprawling arboretum complex. Considered a modern marvel of human engineering, the bridge actually floats on top of Lake Washington. At over 100 meters deep, this lake is also no duck pond. Enjoy sweeping views west towards the Olympic Mountain Range and Olympic National Park, or look south to enjoy majestic views of Mount Raininer and Mount Rainier National Park. On clear days driving eastbound, look north and you can even sometimes see Mount Baker, located near the North Cascades National Park. With so much nature to take in, it's easy to forget your travel woes, or the fact that the electronic toll just zapped your license plate for several dollars. Call or write your Congressperson, mayor, or State Senator to request an end to SR 520 tolling, or even to request an expansion of the "Free" hours of transit which currently are only during the middle of the night from 1-3am (if memory serves). Enjoy your...
