My husband and I went on the BEST excursion ever! And it was only $20! Bill Hill Pond State Park held a Stargazing Float event on the pond and it was absolutely WONDERFUL and SO incredibly beautiful!!! We truly enjoyed it beyond words and need to do it again ASAP! I wish they would do it every month at the pond! (Every WEEK, really!) I can't say enough about it and would recommend ANY of their kayaking events, because their employees are so sweet, helpful and professional! It was definitely a great first impression for our first time ever at the park! The ONLY thing I'd recommend for next time is to provide signs directing people to the pond, because we went to the wrong body of water within the park and had to drive pretty far to find the pond, so we got there quite late, but they waited for us! ❤️ Other than that it was truly a PERFECT experience and we can't wait to do it again! 👌😍

Big Hill Pond is a very quiet park. We almost had it all to ourselves . We stopped at the visitors center since it was our first time there. The park ranger was super nice. There are a lot of hiking trails. We hiked the Dismal Swamp Boardwalk and it was beautiful. We made our way to the lookout tower. It was 81 steps to the top of the tower. The view was amazing from all directions. We made our way across the levee of Travis McNatt Lake. The fishing looked excellant on the lake. The campground was empty. It is primitive camping but you could park smaller campers there. Very nice campground but there are no hook ups. The sites were shaded very well. There is no swimming anywhere on this state park.

My wife and I stayed a week ago. I would give this park a 5 star personally, but the campsites are too close together. This isn't a problem when no one is around. However, a busy season would mean not much privacy. For instance we stayed at campsite 7 which shares a space with campsite 6. This would be very uncomfortable and awkward for 2 different families to have to share a space like that. I feel the park could increase camping activity if they would simply close some of the spots to increase the space. 6 and 7 should be 1 campsite, and the fee could be raised to accommodate. I would pay $20 / night for that large space and stay longer too. You could simply say it is a double site. One other issue is the stall doors on the bathroom are too short. This doesn't give a person much privacy. I haven't seen that in any other state park campground. Otherwise the campground is super clean. The park itself is beautiful. I just wish they would reduce the number of campsites in half to increase space per campsite. I feel your visitation rates would improve. I wonder how much feedback the state used in planning their upgrades. Spending all that money on renovations doesn't matter much if people aren't happy because of close spacing. Maybe these parks should consider cutting campsite numbers in half per campground and increase the number of campgrounds. The improvement would result in more usage and...

Beautiful place that has been getting a lot of new renovations and updating the past couple years. If they added 2-3 cabins and made fishing more accessible for bank fishing and added spaced out primitive tent camp sites along eastern shore of the lake and converted current camp site to electric for the camper crowd it would draw in a huge crowd. It’s remote and beautiful but these additions would make the park a lot of money and create more jobs for the park. Also has a new disc golf coarse that will be a must visit once it gets fleshed out a little more. The observation tower is a must visit especially in early spring before the leaves put out fully and darken. Boardwalk is being fully replaced which it needed badly so lake is drained down. There’s two boardwalks and the one below the lake dam needed the lake drained since its swamp and needed to be dry in order to replace. Can’t wait to see it when it’s done. Also has really pretty birds of prey exhibit where they have rescued birds that are crippled in some way and won’t survive in the wild. Really nice gift shop too...

We made our reservations on the phone and the woman we spoke for was very nice and helpful. We stayed the night here during a road trip, so I can only speak to the campground; the bathrooms were nice and clean, with showers.

The sites themselves were very nice; we were one of two occupied sites in the entire camp area, so there was lots of room. There are tent pads and a lot of good places to hang hammocks. However, if the campground is full, a lot of the sites are right on top of each other.

My only complaint is that we ordered two bundles of wood, which we never received, but we think that it might have been taken by the other campers before we arrived.

EDIT: We never requested a refund on the missing firewood (it was only a few bucks and one chilly night), but we were refunded the cost of the two bundles.

Either they read this review or realized they'd forgotten to make the delivery. Very appreciative of their...
