My family and I love animals and visit as many animal attractions (zoo's, safaris, etc.) that we can. We heard about the opening of this new safari and became excited to visit, but due to our chaotic work schedules we were not able to make the trip for a few weeks. We were initially hesitant due to poor reviews but decided to form our own opinions and made the trip down.......and I'm glad we did!
Located 40 miles south of Memphis on an absolutely stunning piece of property, this park has the potential to become one of the Mid-Souths best attractions!
You are immediately greeted with friendly, helpful, and informative staff upon entering the park. We made it the late in the day but the majority of the animals were still very active and inquisitive, coming right up to our vehicle. All animals appear VERY well cared for and mild mannered (just be prepared for the emu who are like a gang and will surround your vehicle and block you from moving. From our experiences at other attractions this seems to just simply how they act and they will not harm you, except for pecking at your window.)
After you make your way through the safari you have an opportunity to meet, mingle, and feed some of their giraffes who are absolute sweethearts. The bull giraffe might be a little pushy with the others though because he is still young.
We then made our way to the petting zoo portion and struck a conversation with the owner (unfortunately I didn't catch her name.) She shared with us her family plans and vision for what this park will become, the care of the property and the animals, and all the work they have already put in to make this such wonderful experience.
Some nay sayers will say that "there is not enough animals for the price." The owner told me how will be adding more animals as time goes on, adding new species, and new attractions. She also said how they had to open sooner than expected in order to generate revenue. This is completely understandable if your consider the great financial obligations of health and welfare of the animals as well as the feed. You also must consider the need for revenue to expand and add to the park.
All in all, we are so happy that we decided to ignore the negative reviews and experience this ourselves and plan to make many more trips here...
Read moreI took my 9 yr old to the park at 10am on Saturday. The park was almost deserted (no other customers), and the staff was fantastic. We hit all of the attractions: Giraffe Feeding Deck ($5 for a cup of lettuce) - you are face to face with gentle giants. Ruby was at this station, and she was great - super friendly and helpful. Lorakeet enclosure ($5 for 2 small cups of nectar) - this was the most fun, because the birds are not shy about landing on your arms, your shoulders, even your head to get to the nectar. At one point my kid had 6 birds perched on various body parts! Petting zoo - mostly goats and sheep that you can feed with the bags available for sale ($4-5). Also a turtle enclosure and ring-tail lemurs. Camel ride ($10) - The guy doing the rides was helpful and friendly, and educated my kid about the camel during the ride. Plenty of time for photo ops too. -Drive-through safari - This was very enjoyable, lots of interactions with the animals. The ostriches and lamas will be more assertive than most of the other animals when it comes to getting fed. At times the ostriches would "bully" other animals away from the car. Best to drop the food on the ground for the big birds - they will peck at your hand with very large hard beaks, which can be unsettling for little kids and even painful (imagine hitting the palm of your hand hard with a large rock). Never saw the advertised cheetah, but everything else was out roaming and interacting with us. Now, all of this fun will cost you ... The gate admission gets you the petting zoo and the drive through park, that's it. Pretty much everything else costs extra. It was well worth it, but even with just 2 of us we laid out almost 80 bucks for all of the attractions and 5...
Read moreI look forward to visiting this Safari Park again and again. I had so much FUN interacting with the animals. I laughed so much today, the animals was hilarious and comfortable around humans. They were very socialable and very well taken care of. The owner was very nice and welcoming and his dream is awesome and I wish the family much success. I am so proud to have this park in my neck of the woods. It was never a dull moment cruising thru the park. So exciting to feed and touch the animals and look into their beautiful eyes. They have long eyelashes too. The animals have personalities you would be amazed. There was some that didn't mingle but it was equally exciting admiring them from afar. My daughter was with me and we have been laughing and reminiscing every since, almost 12 hours later. This is an early birthday treat for me.I had FUN FUN FUN! I have been reading some of the reviews. There are those complaining about dust. A Safari is about the animals, don't you think it's best for the animals that their home remine as natural as possible. What do the animals need with paved roads we are suppose to be in their world. I think those that complain about washing a car and dust was born in the city. But these are natural habitatants for the animals. Driving thru the park you will see some animals laying in the mudd, chillin. This is what makes them happy. The entrance fee is not bad at all, not much different than the price of a...
