Rivers Edge Golf Club — Attraction in Shallotte

Came back to play this course after being away from the area for several years. The course has filled in nicely since it was first built. The layout is nice, challenging but fair if you play from the correct set of tees. The tee boxes were thin, some with very little grass, and a par 3 on the back hitting from mats! : ( The greenside bunker on #9 was more gravel than sand; we dropped outside the bunker to avoid damage to clubs. The outside staff is generally nice, but the clubhouse staff are much more deferential to members than to the tourist public.

Played 10/23/17, tee time 1:33. Course was wide open, in good shape, staff was very accommodating. Had a great time. Played again 10/26/17, tee time 1:33, booked and paid for online. Arrived at the course to find the clubhouse had changed me to 1:42. There were NO carts, and there were more than 40 bags at the bag drop (I counted.) I went to the range, hit balls, pitched and putted, and chatted up the starter. Finally got into a cart when they paired me with two other singles (local) one of whom was a real jackass. Went off the first tee at 2:38. Played behind drunken foursomes and three slow women. Some of the sand traps were washed out from rain on 10/24, the rest hadn't been raked. Finished when we ran out of daylight. Did the staff ever offer me a refund since tee times were an hour behind? No, I had to suffer through it. This course is Jeckyll and Hyde; take your chances, don't pay until you see how many groups are in front of you.

5/03/22 Came to play 18, had a 9-hole rain check from a previous round. Instead of paying for 1/2 of 18, they charged me the 9-hole single rate, which is higher. Had to wait 40 minutes past our tee time because they were completely overbooked and had no carts. There are no rangers at this course and there is no attempt to maintain pace of play. Our group waited on groups ahead of us on every shot, on every hole. The layout is nice and they get lots of play, but staff makes no accommodations for...

We played this course on 4-27-24 and it was a 6 hour round. It was a unique course but unfortunately we teed off at 2:24 and left the course at 8:20. I typically do not leave reviews for golf courses but this was an experience I won’t forget any time soon. We waited on number 9 tee box for approximately 1 hour. We were told by the ranger shortly after we pulled up to #9 tee box it was a group of young kids that were playing really slow that held everything up. Then we just sat there waiting for the three other group ahead of us to clear the tee box. The ranger never came back to talk to us after that. We barely finished the round due to running out of daylight. I would expect better control of what is happing on the course. For us to wait for one hour on the tee box is totally unacceptable. If we didn’t book this course through golf trip planner… I’d be asking for a refund. I would avoid this one unless you have 6 hours of free time. In their defense this is the busy season and it was a Saturday afternoon tee time so we were expecting a longer round (5ish hours). I had a disappointing experience at River’s Edge Golf Club. The pace of play was unacceptable, taking 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete just the front nine, which is far too slow for the premium prices charged and quit after playing 9 holes. The greens were terribly slow, likely running at a 6 or 7 on the Stimpmeter, which significantly detracted from the experience. The only positive was playing alongside a great member who was apologetic about the conditions, acknowledging that “it is what it is.” I feel for the members who have to deal with these issues regularly. The course layout itself has potential and could be enjoyable, but the slow greens and poor pace of play prevented me from experiencing it at its best. I hope improvements are made to match the course’s pricing and reputation. I’m not a negative person, however, I was playing as a single and thought that by paying a little bit higher price I wouldn’t have to deal with slow play unfortunately, this was not the case and don’t want others to deal with this if they’re looking for a place to play...
