Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site is a must-visit destination for history buffs and outdoor enthusiasts alike. The historic site offers a unique glimpse into the rich cultural and commercial history of the American West. The reconstructed trading post provides visitors with a sense of what life was like for traders, trappers, and Native Americans in the mid-19th century. The museum exhibits are well curated, providing insight into the daily operations of the trading post and the individuals who worked and lived there.

The park also offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation, with trails for hiking and birdwatching, as well as picnic areas for visitors to enjoy a scenic lunch break. The park is well-maintained, and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly, making for an enjoyable and educational experience.

In conclusion, Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site is a great place to spend a day, whether you're interested in history, the great outdoors, or a combination of the two. RANGERS- The rangers there were very nice. We only interacted with two of them. One we found in the general store area where he told us all about the items inside and what they might have been used for. The other ranger was just as knowledable but he was more located in the visitor center.

HISTORY- You can see all different parts of the history here. Although the fort is rebuild as a replica you can see where the buildings would go along with how things would have been set up inside of them.

GIFT SHOP- It is small but it has enough of the things you would want. They have things unique to the park such as Bison jerky and books on the history. They also have magnets, postcards, plushies, and anything else that is a staple at a gift shop for a National Park Service Site.

MUSEUM- The museum showed the different kinds of pelts of the animals in the area. It also showed the story about all the different events and such that went on...

Historic site with an interesting backstory. Long walk from the main parking lot to the fort, especially on a hot day. There is a tiny parking lot slightly closer in, but it was full, and even from there it's a considerable walk, partly uphill, to get into the fort. There's also a sign there saying you can call for cart pickup, but we didn't see that until we were on our way out, after visiting. Would be helpful to make the sign more visible and add one at the other larger parking lot. Good exhibits inside, especially enjoyed getting to touch all the different types of furs that were traded...

Beautiful place but what really made it awesome was the guys who was doing reenacting that got stuck there another day because of rain. We sat down with them for a while talking. They are canoing down the river and doing everything like back in them days. It was so awesome. They was very knowledgeable and we could sit and talk for hrs. I think people would be more interested in learning about the history with things like this going on.. to me it made the whole experience come alive. Thank you to the 3 gentleman that talked with us and made the experience more alive.

This NPS unit sits near the border of Montana and North Dakota so it is a little out of the way but still worth the trip. The visitor center and restrooms are currently closed. The ranger told us they were currently rebuilding (or establishing) the bookstore. We collect NPS stamps and were worried we would miss these. We called ahead of time and they had us use the call box in the parking lot. The ranger met us with the stamps. We really appreciated her generosity! We also took a very muddy walk out to the Missouri River, but we didn’t see any wildlife.
