Made an online reservation for Kahiga. Initially I was unimpressed with the cabin because it is open layout with no separate bedroom. But by the end of my 3 day stay I had grown to love it! The futon is comfy and large enough to sleep 2 people but I had a hard time leaving that bed behind...slept better than I have in awhile. You must bring all of your own toiletries, silverware, handsoap, dishes, pots/pans. I did not bring coffee filters but made due with paper towels. There are no TVs and no wifi equipped in the cabins so this ended up being a very relaxing trip. The park staff were really friendly and helpful! The hiking was so much fun! My favorite part of my stay was exploring this park. I saw many areas that were in disrepair down nearer WaShawtee but I'm one of those people who loves solitude and rejoices in history. There was so much to see that I didn't have enough time to explore all of the trails and areas in the park. The biodiversity here is incredible. I did find many beautiful blooming Paw Paw trees which was a real treat. And I learned more about the history of the park which is always a plus. I look forward to visiting again!

Waubonsie is amazing! Our biggest pet peeve is hearing interstate traffic and it just doesn’t happen here. The only thing we heard overnight was the raccoons banging in and out of the dumpsters. Between that and no sign of recycling was the only downfalls. Other than that it was amazing. The trails are perfectly set, though we didn’t walk the one with the waterfall, they’re all equally great. We found a baby deer on one of the trails and only took a picture and kept moving as not to disturb nature. The overlook points were great and the maps pointed them out perfectly. Campsites fill up fast so I recommend reserving a site even though it’s a pain. RV campers take up most the sites which is also annoying though not the parks fault. They do offer cabins we plan to rent at some point. They sell firewood on an honor roll system so make sure to bring cash. Each site has a fire pit and picnic table. We will definitely be back! Gorgeous hidden gem in Iowa!

We feel that Waubonsie State Park is a hidden gem in the South West corner of Iowa. I first went to the park as a child more than 50 years ago. Since then it has expanded and now includes what at one time was a Girl Scouts camp. There are very well kept campsites for rv's and tent camping. Clean restrooms with showers. Cabins are also available for almost any size of group. Some of the cabins have fireplaces inside and also on the porch, great for autumn foliage viewing. The park staff are great, friendly and helpful. We have found that the equestrian loop can be a great place to camp. There are times when it's busy, but for the most part it's pretty quiet. There are some nice hiking trails that you be sharing with horses (after all it's their trail). The camping is "primitive", so no hookups for campers, be prepared for boondocking if you bring a camper. There are a couple of water spigots, but only vault toilets.

The campground here is fairly nice.

Pads are mostly level with a slight slope to the rear. No water hookup or sewer for campers, but this isn't a drawback. The sites are spaced with enough breathing room inbetween.

The shower house is clean and kept up enough. No frills, but you won't feel like your getting dirtier by walking into it.

The cabins are very spacious, with a large yard. Any issues that have come across, the DNR has been very accommodating and reactive.

There are plenty of hiking trails to go around, some are mowed, some have gravel, and some are a little more for the off roaders. Wildlife is plentiful, and the forest is peaceful. I want to say there is some mosquito controls in place in the main thoroughfares. The only thing lacking for the trails is clear markings for the trail heads.

We were very disappointed with the small pond addition. My family was hoping to do a little fishing without having to leave the park, but left us wanting.

Very enjoyable experience that our kids...
